Devils move into fourth place with win

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State scored twice in the second half and clinched a SUNYAC playoff berth with a 2-0 home win over Buffalo State.

Freshman Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute with her fifth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Mimi Blackman (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon).

Following a midfield interception by a teammate, Blackman took a short run up the right side before passing to Heilweil, who dribbled past a defender before firing the ball past Buffalo State starting goalkeeper Katie Melsert (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills).

Sophomore Jacki Borcyk (Rochester/Greece Odessey) added an insurance goal in the 90th minute, assited by Heilweil, with a long shot over the head of Ashley Vail (Rochester/Churchville-Chili), who replaced Melsert midway through the second half.

Fredonia State sophomore Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) made three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season and the 12th in two seasons, third most in school history. Melsert made four saves and Vail two in the Buffalo State net.

The Blue Devils (9-5-1, 6-2-0 SUNYAC) moved into fourth place with the win and tied a single-season school record -- set last year -- for most conference wins. They will have a chance to surpass the mark over the weekend when they play host to Geneseo (3 p.m. Friday) and Brockport (1 p.m. Saturday).

The loss dropped Buffalo State to 9-5-2 overall, 5-3-0 in the conference.
