Devils, Lakers play to scoreless tie

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and Oswego played to a scoreless SUNYAC tie Friday at Laker Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue Devils (5-5-2, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) outshot the Lakers 12-4 in the second half, but the Lakers (4-5-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) had the two best scoring chances. In the 46th minute, Oswego State's Amy Hedlund dribbled past the Blue Devil defense and was fouled as she entered the penalty area. A penalty-kick was awarded, and Oswego State's Tricia Sullivan took the shot from the spot, but junior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) dove to her left and made the save, and covered the rebound.

The Blue Devils maintained possession for most of the second half, but Oswego State had another scoring chance in the 87th minute, as Sullivan broke past the Fredonia State defense and was in alone, but Scroger came off the line to make the save.

The Blue Devils held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, and Scroger had four saves. Laker goalkeeper Toby Klein had nine saves.

Following the game, a penalty-kick shootout was held as a tiebreaker for playoff seeding if necessary. The Blue Devils won the shootout, 6-5.

The Blue Devils travel to Cortland for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
