Devils fall in OT to Cortland, 1-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Mandy Womelsdorf (Buffalo/West Seneca West) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season with one minute, 43 seconds remaining in overtime as the Cortland women’s soccer team defeated Fredonia, 1-0, Saturday night at Holloway Field. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 5-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils fell to 8-4-1 and 5-2.

Each team had chances to win the game in regulation but failed to capitalize. For Fredonia, sophomore Jacki Borcyk (Rochester/Greece Odyssey) hit the crossbar with a shot from 15 yards in the 12th minute, and junior Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) curled a corner kick toward the upper corner that Cortland junior goalie Megan Thayer (Walworth/Wayne Central) saved in the 16th minute. The Red Dragons had two excellent chances in the second half. In the 59th minute, sophomore Katie Trivisonno (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) was alone in front but her shot sailed over the crossbar. Then, with less than five minutes in regulation, senior Marie Valentino (Ithaca) put a shot over the top after a cross from Trivisonno.

In overtime, the Blue Devils nearly won the game, but Thayer punched junior Jess Weinberger’s (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) high shot in the 94th minute over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, Bleecker got a clean touch, but her shot went wide.

Cortland earned the win on a quick counterattack. Trivisonno dribbled up the right side, beat two Fredonia defenders into the middle and put a shot on goal that eluded Fredonia sophomore goalie Becky Scroger (Spencerport). The shot caromed off of the crossbar and to the left side of the box where Womelsdorf one-timed a shot into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.

Thayer finished with eight saves for her second straight shutout, while Scroger stopped two shots for Fredonia.
