Devils advance to ECAC semifinals

NEW PALTZ , N.Y. -- A goal by freshman defender Mimi Blackman (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) carried Fredonia State past New Paltz, 2-1, in an ECAC Upstate Tournament quarterfinal game Wednesday afternoon.

Blackman's goal, her first as a collegian, broke a 1-1 tie and sent the Blue Devils (11-6-4) on to a semifinal meeting with tournament host and No. 1 seed Nazareth College at 11 a.m. Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, Fredonia State took a 1-0 when a hard shot by senior Danielle Rawcliffe (Rochester/Irondequoit) deflected off a New Paltz player into her own net. The own-goal came at 58:21

The Hawks (10-7-2) forged a 1-1 tie on a goal by Kate Addiss, assisted by Jennifer Anselmi, at 63:08.

Blackman netted the game-winner at 80:29, assisted by senior midfielder Anita Salinas (Rochester/Greece Athena).

Fredonia State had a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) was credited with six saves.

The other Fredonia State women's soccer news, the Blue Devils cracked the NCAA Division III New York regional rankings for the first time in Chris Case's four years as head coach. They are tied with Cortland for 10th in the poll, released Tuesday.
