Freshman's first collegiate goal nips New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its SUNYAC season Friday with a 2-1 victory over New Paltz.

An unassisted goal by freshman Megan Gicei (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) at the 70:19 mark broke a 1-1 tie in favor of the Blue Devils (2-2-2, 1-0-0 SUNYAC).

It was Gicei's first goal as a collegian.

Senior forward/midfielder Amy Wenzel (Elma/Iroquois) gave the Blue Devils the momentum heading into halftime with a goal at 42:46, assisted by Jess Weinberger (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon).

New Paltz took a 1-0 lead at 20:06 on a goal by Stephanie Potts.

Freshman goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) made seven saves, five coming in the second half when the Hawks (2-1-1, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) stepped up the offensive pressure.

The Blue Devils were outshot, 13-9, and trailed in corner kicks, 6-2.

Fredonia State's weekend road trip resumes Saturday with a game at Oneonta, the SUNYAC coaches' preseason favorite to win a seventh straight conference title. Game time is noon.
