No. 3 Oneonta blanks Blue Devils, 3-0

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Third-ranked Oneonta ran its SUNYAC unbeaten streak to 89 games (88-0-1) with a 3-0 road win Friday over Fredonia State.

The Red Dragons (10-1,0, 5-0-0 SUNYAC) scored in the third minute and kept up the pressure throughout. They had a 21-5 shot advantage.

Fredonia State goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) was called on to make eight saves. The Blue Devils (6-4-1, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) put just three of their five shots on net.

Oneonta sophomore forward Lindsey Brechbeil (Garnerville/North Rockland) started the scoring when she slipped a pass to junior forward Kirsten Clapper (Dryden/Dryden) on the right flank. Clapper scored from the right of the box at 2:36. It was her fourth goal of the season. She later had a second goal in the game disallowed.

The Blue Devils (6-4-1, 3-1-0) were taking the play into the Oneonta end before the visitors countered. Brechbiel made it 2-0 when she crossed a perfectly placed ball into the upper left corner at 13:44 for her second goal of the year.

Junior midfielder Mary Velan (Stamford/Stamford) completed the scoring when she intercepted a clear, dribbled through defenders, and scored her 11th goal of the season at 58:24.

Junior goalkeeper Jeannine Marra (Thells/North Rockland) made three saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season.

Fredonia State returns to the Brigham Road Field 1 p.m. Saturday vs. New Paltz, while Oneonta visits Buffalo State.
