Blue Devils dent scoreboard into final

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State scored its first goals -- and its first win -- of the young season with a 3-0 victory Friday over Hiram College in the first round of the Blue Devil Days Inn Tournament.

Held scoreless in their first two games of the season, the Blue Devils (1-2-0) wasted little time denting the Brigham Road Field scoreboard against Hiram. Freshman defender Dominique Rupert (Holley/Holley) scored 4:20 into the contest. The unassisted tally was her first as a collegian.

Freshman forward Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) followed suit with her first collegiate goal, assisted by sophomore defender Meghan Thoin (Buffalo/Mount St. Mary's) at 46:38. Junior midfielder Linsay Kulas (Rochester/Aquanis Institute) closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 53:36.

Sophomore goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) was called on to make two saves to earn the shutout. Hiram freshman goalkeeper Melissa Maskulka (Mayfield Heights, Ohio) stopped 10 shots.

The Blue Devils outshot their guests, 25-6.

Fredonia State will face Penn State Behrend in the tournament championship game, while Hiram will face Mount Union in an all-Ohio consolation game starting at 11 a.m. The title game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Behrend got two goals from freshman forward Cassie Berlin (Cranberry, Pa.) and one from sophomore forward Beth Manganero (Pittsburgh) for a 3-0 win over Mount Union in the other first-round game Friday. Freshman goalkeeper Beth Lacy (Erie, Pa.) made four stops to earn the shutout for the Lions (1-0-0). Junior goalkeeper Seana Kelly (Garfield Heights, Ohio) was credited with eight saves for the Raiders (0-3-0).
