Shootout decides Days Inn title in Devils' favor

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- For the second straight day, the Fredonia State women and their opponent needed a shootout to decide the winner of their game.

And for the second straight day, the Blue Devils (0-2-2) came out on top -- claiming the Fredonia State Days Inn Tournament as a result.

Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) was named tournament most valuable player after her five-save performance in the title game, a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Smith College.

Abbey Saxby (Ontario/Wayne) made the decisive free kick, the fourth Blue Devil to net a shot during the tournament-deciding shootout (the game is officially counted as a tie). Erin Schurr (Hamburg/Hamburg), Linsay Kulas (Rochester/Aquinas Institute), and Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) were also successful during the shootout.

Kulas, Bleecker, and Anita Salinas (Rochester/Greece Athena) were chosen to the all-tournament team along with Scroger.

Smith's all-tourney players were Ellie Loomis (Mountain View, Calif.), Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, Calif.), and Natalie Sullivan (Aptos, Calif.).

Other all-tourney players were Jess Knight (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Lauren Manfrass (Garretsville, Ohio) of Hiram College, and Jessica Thompson (Bow, N.H.) and Kenzie Jones (Loveland, Col.) of Principia College. Hiram defeated Principia, 1-0, in the tournament consolation game on a goal by Amy Romanow (Framingham, Mass.) and the 12-save, shutout goalkeeping of Stephanie Bandelow (Mayfield Heights, Ohio).

In the championship game, Fredonia State took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jamie Pricola (Brockport/Brockport) in the 29th minute of the first half. Pricola scored on a rebound off a header, with Jessica Weiser (Rochester/Greece Athena) earning an assist.

Smith forged a 1-1 tie in the 69th minute on a goal by Monroe Peterson (New York City). Caitlyn Colman-McGaw (Manchester, Conn.) was credited with an assist.

The Blue Devils outshot the Pioneers, 9-5, while the teams were even in corner kicks, 2-2. Smith goalkeeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, Ohio) was credited with four saves.
