Weiser's goal nets Fredonia tie

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- After two overtimes, the Fredonia State (0-2-1) women ended in a 1-1 tie with the Hiram Terriers (0-3-1), despite a 20-9 advantage in shots on goal. Fredonia will play in the championship game Saturday afternoon by virtue of winning a shootout, 3-0, following the game.

Jessica Weiser (Rochester/Greece Athena) scored the unassisted game-tying goal with just 4:25 left to play. Weiser then almost won the game with :40 remaining on a penalty kick that hit the left post.

Lauren Manfrass (Garretsville, Oh./Walsh Jesuit) scored the lone goal for Hiram at 26:03 of the second half. She was assisted by LeAnn Humes (Mercer, Penna./Mercer).

The Blue Devil's best chance to win in overtime came when Erin Shurr (Hamburg/Hamburg) missed wide right on a breakaway with 2:13 remaining.

In other action Smith defeated previously unbeaten Principia, 4-0. Janine Olthuis (Cavan, Ont./Sir James Dunn) scored the first of four second half goals for Smith with 39:15 remaining.

Johanna Perez (San Fransisco, Cal./Gateway), Amelia Stoker (Salt Lake City, Utah/East), and Kate Johnson (Auburn, Kan./Washburn Regional) each added a goal for Smith, while Catherine Peo (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) tallied two assists. Smith goalkeeper Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, Cal./Bishop O'Dowd) had a strong game saving ten shots. Smith is now 1-0 while Principia dropped to 3-1 on the season.

Fredonia State will take on Smith at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the championship game of the Days Inn Classic. The consolation game between Principia and Hiram will be held at 11 a.m.
