Weiser leads Devils into Days Inn title game

R0CHESTER, N.Y.Junior forward Jessica Weiser (Rochester/Greece Athena) scored the game-winning goal Friday as Fredonia State downed Grove City, 3-0, in the first round of the Days Inn Classic.

Freshman forward Linsay Kulas (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) and junior forward Danielle Rawcliffe (Rochester/Irondequoit) had the other goals for the Blue Devils (3-1-1), who'll play Wartburg, Iowa, at 4 p.m. Saturday for the tournament title.

Weiser opened the scoring at 27:00 when she took a through ball from Kulas and beat Grove City sophomore goalkeeper Kori Koper (N. Huntingdon, Pa.), who was credited with 11 saves.

The same two Blue Devils teamed up again at 69:05 when Weiser fed Kulas with a perfect cross pass from five yards out. Kulas volleyed the shot into the net.

Rawcliffe scored an insurance goal at 84:37 when she left-footed a shot off a through ball from senior midfielder Sarah Quattrone (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone).

Senior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey (Chittenango/Chittenango) made two saves for the shutout.

In the early first-round game, Wartburg senior forward Tiffany Treanor (Dubuque, Iowa) scored with 19 seconds remaining to give the Knights (5-0) a 2-1 victory over Capital. Junior forward Jessica Iserman (Waverly, Iowa) scored her team's first goal at 6:30 exactly one minute after Capital (0-4) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman forward Megan Schmittauek (Springfield, Ohio).

The consolation game between Capital and Grove City (0-4) starts at noon Saturday.
