Wartburg claims Days Inn title

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Wartburg (Iowa) Warriors broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute to overcome Fredonia State and become the 2004 Days Inn Tournament champions with a 1-0 victory.

Wartburg’s starting forward Andi Hudgens (Batavia, Ill.) scored the lone goal. It came on a breakaway set up by fellow forward Jessica Iserman (Waverly, Iowa).

The Warriors improved their record to 6-0. The loss dropped Fredonia State to 3-2-1. Wartburg goalkeeper Mary Achelpohl (Quincy, Ill.) earned the win and accounted for four key saves in preserving the shutout victory.

Fredonia goalkeeper Brianna Falvey (Chittenango/Chittenango) made five stops. Wartburg defender Katie Rapp (Bettendorf, Iowa) secured the Days Inn Tournament MVP award in leading a suffocating Wartburg defense which allowed only one goal throughout the two-day tournament.

Other players from Wartburg earning all-tournament honors were Achelpohl, Kristin Beck (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Tiffany Treanor (Dubuque, Iowa).

Jessica Weiser (Rochester/Greece Athena), Anita Salinas (Rochester/Greece Athena) and Falvey were recognized as all-tournament players from Fredonia State.

In the consolation game, Capital (1-4) edged Grove City (0-5) on a second-half goal by freshman midfielder-forward Molly Shiplett (Plain City, Ohio). Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Allan (Sylvania, Ohio) made eight saves in the 1-0 shutout win. Allen and senior defender Emily Dineen (Middletown, Ohio) were selected to the all-tournament team.

All-tourney selections from Grove City were sophomore back Jess Van Sickel (Gibsonia, Pa.) and sophomore midfielder Maia Siber (Canton, Ohio), who had a shot deflect off the inside of the right upright late in the game.
