Sponholz provisionally qualifies in 3-meter diving
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State sophomore diver Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden) picked up where she left off with a double victory in the first meet of the new season.
Sponholz won the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events Saturday in the Blue Devils' 157-69 win over Morrisville State College. She broke Steele Hall Natatorium records in the process, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet off the 3-meter board.
Her score in the 1-meter was 233.95, while her 3-meter score was 257.60 -- 30 points better than the previous best pool score.
Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) was a triple winner for the Blue Devils, with victories in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle, and a leg on the 200-yard medley relay, while freshman Taylor Kelly (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) won the 100-yard breastroke in team-record time of 1:13.34. She also was part of a winning relay.
Other multiple winners were junior Lexi Chapman (Lockport/Lockport), sophomore Liz Mirt (Rochester/Aquinas), and freshman Monica Dunlevy (Batavia/Batavia). Chapman won the 200 freestyle, Mirt the 200 individual medley, and Dunlevy the 1,000 freestyle.
