Nazareth women edge Devils
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Nazareth College women's swim team slipped past Fredonia State 128-115 at Steele Hall on Saturday.
For the Devils, Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) and freshman diver Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden) were double winners.
Austin claimed victory in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in times of 25:85 and 56:30, respectively.
Sponholz won the 3 meter and 1 meter diving. She edged out teammate Teresa MacInnes (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) in both events. Sponholz scored 210.05 in the three meter and 233.65 in the one meter. Her mark on the one meter board was a new school and pool record. MacInnes turned in marks of 194.45 and 224.50.
The Devils had no other individual or relay winners.
The Fredonia State men defeated Nazareth, 131-80.
Although the women came up short, head coach Arthur Wang was pleased with the performances of both his teams. "Overall, I can't be dissappointed by the effort the women's and men's teams have put together... this meet and every meet we've had this semester," said Wang. "We've avenged some losses from last year, and it only seems to be getting better."
Last year, the women's team lost by 58 points to Nazareth. This year, the meet was decided in the final two events.
Both Blue Devil teams are back in the Steele Hall Natatorium water for the Blue Devil Invitational on Dec. 2 through Dec. 4. They will host Nazareth, Alfred, Jamestown Community College, Mercyhurst-North East, Oswego, Behrend and Potsdam in the eight-team event.
