Sponholz records provisional score off 1-meter board

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Add conference and meet records to the diving resume of Fredonia State freshman Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden).

Sponholz registered 446.3 points during preliminaries of the 1-meter diving competition Friday at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center. In addition to setting the records, her score also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard, pending video review later this month.

She will be the No. 1 seed heading into the finals Saturday. On Thursday, she won the 3-meter diving title and improved to 21-0 in all events this season.

Four other Fredonia State women's records were set Friday.

In the morning, sophomore freestyle Lexie Chapman (Lockport/Lockport) established a new 200-yard freestyle record (2:01.24), while freshman backstroker Emily Dizer (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) was clocked in 1:02.75 in the 200-yard backstroke. Chapman eventually finished 10th in the event with a final time of 2:01.26. Dizer finished seventh overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:03.08 during the evening finals.

Also during the evening session, Fredonia State's 800-yard women's freestyle quartet of freshman Liz Mirt (Rochester/Aquinas), Chapman, junior Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford), and sophomore Stacy Krens (Brockport/Brockport) earned 30 team points with a fourth-place finish. They were timed in 8:10.76.

Mirt also set a mark of her own with a 4:55.81 clocking in the 400-yard individual medley. Her time was one-hundredths of one second faster than the previous school record.
