Sponholz, undefeated in 21 events this season, outdistanced the seven other finalists -- including three teammates -- with 449.55 points for 11 dives at the Flickinger Aquatic Center on the Erie Community College-City campus. Sophomore Teresa MacInnes (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) finished second -- an improvement of two places from her freshman season -- with 377.20 points. In addition, junior Kelly Maloney (Corning/Corning-Painted Post West) finished sixth with 340.65 points, and junior Laura Walther (Livonia/Livonia) was eighth with 327.45. The four divers accounted for 61 of the 139 points scored by Fredonia State athletes on the first day of the three-day meet. The Blue Devils ended the day in fifth place, one point behind fourth-place New Paltz. In swimming events, sophomore Lexie Chapman (Lockport/Lockport) finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, and freshman Liz Mirt (Rochester/Aquinas) was sixth in the 200-yard individual medley. Both women set school records in the process: Chapman at 5:21.39 for the 500, Mirt 2:16.71 in the medley. Fredonia State's 400-yard medley relay team finished fifth and also set a new school mark. The swimmers participating were freshman Emily Dizer (Tonawanda/Sweet Home), Chapman, Mirt, and junior Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford). Their record time was 4:16.04. The Championships run through Saturday with preliminaries (10 a.m.) and finals (6 p.m.) scheduled each of the next two days.
