Devils move up again at SUNYAC Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fredonia State finished fifth in the SUNYAC Championships held over the weekend at the Eastside Racquet Club.

Freshman Elise Daigler (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) reached the finals at No. 6 singles, and she and doubles partner and fellow freshman Sierra Summerville (Mexico/Mexico) were semifinalists at No. 3 doubles.

The fifth-place finish represented the third straight year the Blue Devils have moved up in the conference standings. The 2002 team was 10th, the 2003 team was eighth, and the Blue Devils were tied for sixth in 2004.

The No. 4 seed at No. 6 singles, Daigler improved her singles record to 8-0 before falling in her conference championship match. She defeated Brockport's Angie Bermudez, 6-0 and 6-4, in the quarterfinals, then dispatched No. 1 seed Elise Perigard of Oneonta in a three-set semifinal, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4.

Daigler's run ended against No. 3 seed Brittany Gilligan of New Paltz in the title match, 6-0 and 6-4.

In No. 3 doubles, Daigler and Summerville were unseeded at the start but soon made of name for themselves with a 7-5 and 6-1 quarterfinal win over the No. 3 seed pair, Lauren Eichenauer and Maureen Peer of Geneseo. Daigler and Summerville were ousted in the semifinals by New Paltz's No. 2-seeded team of Ashley and Lindsay Trifiletti, 6-0, 4-6 and 6-2.

Summerville nearly reached the finals No. 5 singles. Seeded No. 4, she defeated Oswego's Theresa Ruane, 6-1 and 6-2, in a quarterfinal match, only to fall in a tiebreaker to No. 1 seed Jennifer Larson of New Paltz, 6-2 and 7-6 (1), in the semifinal round.

Other Blue Devils competing at SUNYACS were sophomore Brittany Pagano (Silver Creek/Nequa Valley, Ill.), sophomore Marie Holla (Wellsville/Wellsville), junior Ellen Engel (Rochester/Irondequoit), sophomore Rachel LaPaglia (Fredonia/Fredonia), and sophomore Amy Sacca (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs).
