Doubles team advances to Sunday round

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State doubles team of senior Ellen Engel (Rochester/Irondequoiut) and junior Amy Sacca (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) reached the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Tennis Championships before being eliminated.

Engel and Sacca, competing in the third-doubles draw, posted a 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over the No. 3 seeded team of Mechon Brower and Amanda McElroy of Cortland, then fell 6-2 and 6-0 to the No. 1 seeds and eventual champs Laura-Elizabeth Bernie and Lyndsey Lovinger of New Paltz.

Engel, the lone senior on the Blue Devil team, was competing in her final collegiate match.

In other action, Fredonia State's first-doubles pairing of juniors Marie Holla (Wellsville/Wellsville) and Brittany Pagano (Silver Creek/Nequa Valley, Ill.) were defeated 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals by Oneonta's Nicole Lindell and Katie Wlodarczyk.

In second doubles, sophomores Elise Daigler (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) and Sierra Summerville (Mexico/Mexico) fell 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to Geneseo's Vivian Cheung and Erika Pumple.

In singles play Saturday, three Blue Devils were defeated in quarterfinal-round matches. Pagano fell 6-0, 6-1 by Cortland's Amanda Husson in first singles, Daigler trailed Geneseo's Krissy Fiekert 6-1, 2-0 in third singles before retiring with an injury, and Summerville was ousted 6-3, 6-3 in fourth singles by Oneonta's Zirka Markewycz.

The Blue Devils earned six team points over the three days of competition to finish in sixth place among nine teams. Complete results are posted on the SUNYAC website at www.sunyac.com/tennis.
