Devils push Behrend to the limit

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- An undermanned Fredonia State team pushed Penn State Behrend to the limit before falling 5-4 Wednesday in women's collegiate tennis.

Three singles players were unavailable yet the Blue Devils (1-4) still managed to claim three points by virtue of wins by juniors Brittany Pagano (Silver Creek/Nequa Valley, Ill.) and Amy Sacca (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs), and freshman Megan Zarzycki (Rochester/Irondequoit).

Pagano's 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles avenged a 9-7 loss to Penn State Behrend's Allison Mudrey when the teams met last Saturday at the Penn State Behrend Invitational. Meanwhile, Sacca earned at point at No. 5 singles as a last-minute replacement for a missing teammate, and Zarzycki improved to 3-0 this season at the No. 6 slot.

The Blue Devils' other win came from the No. 3 doubles team of Sacca and senior Ellen Engel (Rochester/Irondequoit).

The two teams meet again Sept. 19 when the Blue Devils travel to Penn State Behrend.
