Netters look for additional improvement

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's tennis team moved up three spots, from ninth to sixth, at the season-ending SUNYAC Championship Tournament last fall.

While a similar three-spot jump might be a bit of a reach, head coach Joe Calarco has high expectations for a same type of on-the-court improvement.

"Losing No. 1 (singles player) Kim Menth to graduation," said Calarco, "leaves a huge hole at the top of the lineup. (That) is a major concern (as is) having a young, inexperienced team. But I'm hoping to improve on last season."

Ellen Engel, a junior, is team captain. The other returning players are senior Sandra Payne; junior Stacey Washer; and sophomores Brittany Pagano, Rachel LaPaglia, Marie Holla, and Sarah Yates. Pagano recorded a team-leading 9-3 singles record in 2004, including a win at the SUNYAC Tournament. LaPaglia and Yates also won SUNYAC matches as freshmen.

Newcomers to the roster are seniors Alexis Perla and Amy Sak; sophomores Amy Sacca and Sarah Spicola; and freshmen Elise Daigler and Sierra Summerville.

The Blue Devils open their season Sept. 3 with a home match vs. Geneseo starting at 1 p.m.
