Devils top Frostburg for first win

ERIE, Pa. – A 5-0 victory over Frostburg gave the Fredonia State Blue Devils their first victory of the 2004 season.

The Blue Devils (1-2) lost to Alfred, 5-0, and to host Penn State Behrend, 4-1, earlier in the day at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.

Freshman Brittany Pagano (Silver Creek/Nequa Valley, Ill.) was the lone double winner for Fredonia State. Competing at third singles, she won her matches 8-0 (vs. Behrend) and 8-1 (vs. Frostburg).

Other winners of their Frostburg singles matches were senior Kimberly Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda), freshman Marie Holla (Wellsville/Wellsville), and sophomore Ellen Engel (Rochester/Irondequoit).

The doubles team of freshmen Rachel LaPaglia (Fredonia/Fredonia) and Sarah Yates (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) were also victorious vs. Frostburg.

Penn State Behrend 4, Fredonia State 1 -- Allison Midrey (P) d. Menth 8-0; Mindy Calvert (P) d. Holla 8-2; Pagano (F) d. Christie Leininger 8-0; Jenna Yankowski (P) d. Engel 8-6; Katie Ranalli and Shelley Goodpastor (P) d. Yates and LaPaglia 8-1.

Fredonia State 5, Frostburg 0 --- Menth (F) d. Heidi Pignozzi 8-3; Holla (F) d. Jennifer Talbert 8-3; Pagano (F) d. Rachel Sooy 8-1; Engel (F) d. Sharis Erwin 8-1; Yates and LaPaglia (F) d. Charlena Reeves and Aimee Mendoza 9-7.
