Three freshmen win SUNYAC matches

MANLIUS, N.Y. – Three Fredonia State freshmen won one each match before they were ousted by No. 1 seeds Saturday from the SUNYAC Championships.

Brittany Pagano (Silver Creek/Nequa Valley, Ill.) raised her personal mark to 9-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 over Oswego's Sara Gotlieb win Friday in the fourth-singles draw. Pagano fell to No. 1 seed Ashley Abar of Cortland 6-1, 6-0 in a quarterfinal match to finish her season with a 9-3 singles record.

Sarah Yates (Orchard Park) rallied to defeat No. 4 seed Molly Pioch of Potsdam 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 in the fifth-singles quarterfinal round. No. 1 seed Meredith McCaslin of Cortland ousted Yates 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals.

The third Fredonia State freshman win came from Rachel LaPaglia (Fredonia) when she defeated Jamie McDonald of Brockport 7-6(4), 6-4 in sixth singles. LaPaglia was then ousted by No. 1 seed Amanda Rosario of New Paltz 6-1, 6-0 in a quarterfinal match.

The championships were held at the Eastside Racquet Club.
