Galvin overtakes discus competition

SLIPPERY ROCK, N.Y.Jennifer Galvin (Pompey/Fabius-Pompey) made a big jump Saturday in the finals of the women's discus at the Slippery Rock Invitational.

Fifth in the preliminary round with a throw of 113 feet, 7 inches, Galvin overtook the field with a throw of 120 feet to win the event.

Galvin also won the hammer throw with a toss of 142 feet, second best in school history and 10 feet farther than her previous personal best.

The Blue Devils had five of the top 10 finishes in the 3,000-meter run. Kristen Veltz (Brockport/Brockport) was third in 11:16.20, Amanda Dron (Webster/Webster) was fourth, Jennifer Martin (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy) sixth, Alison Morgan (Hilton/Hilton) eighth and Ashley Tramp (Buffalo/Kenmore East) 10th.

Other top performances by Fredonia State athletes included a fifth-place finish by Liz Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary's of Lancaster) in the long jump with a season-best 17'2", and sixth by Rachel McNamara (Lakeview/Nardin Academy) in the 400 meters. Her time was the second best in school history.

The Blue Devils will prepare this week for the SUNYAC championship meet Friday and Saturday.
