Devils tie best-ever finish

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's cross country team finished second overall at the SUNYAC meet held at Beaver Island State Park to match the 2004 team for the program's best-ever finish

No. 1-ranked and defending national champ Geneseo won the event with 31 points with six runners in the top 10. The Fredonia State women finished with 81 points.

Freshman Jessica Bennett (Rochester/West Irondequoit) was sixth overall over the 6,000-meter course with a time of 24:08. As a result of finishing in the top seven, she was named First Team All SUNYAC.

Senior Rachel McNamara (Lakeview/Nardin) was 14th in 25:08. Fellow seniors Ashley Tramp (Buffalo/Kenmore East) and Aimee Milks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) finished 19th and 20th, respectively, with times of 25:31 and 25:36.

Head Coach Nolan Swanson, named SUNYAC women's cross country Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the meet, was pleased with the women's finish. "They did an awesome job and ran smart," he said. "We beat Cortland who was ranked ahead of us and Brockport, who was ranked 35th in the NCAA. We're hopeful when next week's NCAA rankings come out that we'll receive our first-ever ranking."

The Fredonia State men finished in sixth place. Cortland took the men's championship with 29 points as they had five finishers place in the top 10.

Freshman Tom Williams (Queensbury/Queensbury) led the way for the Fredonia State men finishing 17th in the 8,000-meter course with a time of 24:45. Sophomore Jason Smith (Queensbury/Queensbury) finished 27th in 25:31 and freshman Jared Newell (Queensbury/Queensbury) came in 28th in 25:32.

The Fredonia State men had 149 points, eight behind Plattsburgh State for fifth place. SUNY Geneseo took second place with 40.
