Men claim Nazareth title

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men took the team title in an eight-team field at the Nazareth Invitational on Saturday. The women finished in second place.

It was the men's first team title of any kind in over 10 seasons, and the first under the direction of head coach Nolan Swanson.

Vinny Granata (Fallbrook, Calif.) finshed second overall in a time of 21:21. Tom Williams (Queensbury) was third 21:28. Andy Dunscombe (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Chris Walters (Tonawanda/Sweet Home), finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Josh Guarino, 11th; Mac McMahill, 13th; and Andy Forma, 15th, rounded out a strong team effort in the 49-man field.

The win should help the Blue Devils earn more points, and possibly move ahead of Nazareth, in the NCAA Atlantic Region and New York State Collegiate Track Conference rankings.

"The possibility for us to do better is still there," Swanson told the Dunkirk-Fredonia Observer. "We're trying to have our best face at SUNYACs, so we'll be peaking toward that one in two weeks."

The SUNYAC championship meet is Oct. 20 at Potsdam.

Also Saturday at Nazareth, the Fredonia State women tied Daemen College for second place behind the host team. Top Blue Devils were Trisha Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), 3rd in 16:07; Samantha Ellwood (Hamburg), 6th in 16:44; and Lea Genung (Dunkirk), 24th in 17:51. No. 1 runner Jessica Bennett (Rochester/West Irondequoit) did not participate.
