Behrend used an 18-hit attack to take the opener in an easy 18-1 romp over Fredonia. Behrend scored 1 in the first, then took charge in the second with an 8 run inning, chasing starting pitcher Tim Lockhart (Lewiston-Porter) (1-1). The Lions managed at least one run in every inning. With six seniors playing in their final game, Fredonia took the lead in the first on a Mario Muscarella (Falconer) triple and Clark double. They added another in the second as Nick Fiorella (Falconer) scored on an error by the shortstop off the bat of Adam Fusco (York). Behrend tied the score using leadoff triples in the third and fourth innings off starter Brandon Miller (Ripley). A four-run fifth gave the lead back to Fredonia. Clark delivered with a bases loaded double, clearing the bases. The Blue Devils scored the fourth run of the inning on another error by the Behrend shortstop. They upped the lead to 7-2 in the top- of the sixth, scoring another run on the third error of the day by the shortstop. Behrend answered with 3 runs in sixth. A double, an error and triple off the bat of Tom Elzer exited Miller from the game. Wiand drove in Elzer with a single off reliever Eric Andrews (Horseheads) (3-4), who suffered the loss. Fredonia took the 7-5 lead into the final inning. The Blue Devils could not hold back Behrend as they rallied for 3 runs in the inning and an 8-7 victory. Clark finished his career with a bang, going 6-for-7 in the double header. Muscarella had 3 hits in his final to games two pace the Blue Devil offense. Weitzel, Fiorella, Steve McGinnis (Victor), and Mark Taurisani (Utica Proctor) were the other seniors playing their final games for Fredonia. April 26 -- Plattsburgh 9-7, Blue Devils 3-3: Fredonia State's bid to land a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs was seemingly dashed Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Dave Waldron (Saranac) scattered six hits and struck out nine over seven innings for a 9-3 win in the opener. Sabec cracked a two-run homer in the seventh and the Cardinals added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by John Lerner (Valley Falls/LaSalle Institute). Bret McCabe (Buffalo/St. Francis) pitched a complete-game loss. Muscarella and Clark had RBI double among Fredonia State's five hits. They can almost assure themselves of one of four playoff spots with similar success Saturday against Plattsburgh in a noon doubleheader at home. The Blue Devils used two big innings in each game – a 9-run third for a 9-7 in the opener, and a 7-run eighth inning to fashion a 13-7 come-from-behind win in the nightcap. The Blue Devils got the bats going in the bottom of the second. Matt Clark hit his sixth homer of the year leading off the inning. Two Hilbert errors and an Adam Fusco double accounted for two more tallies. A Dan Morales single put Fredonia up 4-2. The Blue Devils held on for a 6-3 win as Mike Munski went the distance on the mound. He scattered 9 hits and struck out 3 to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. The Devils, short on pitching and with four big conference games in the next two days, sent Munski out to start the nightcap. He was spotted 8 runs in the second. However, after 3 scoreless frames, the Hilbert bats caught up to him. Hilbert used an 8-hit inning to put up 11 runs. The Hawks held a 13-12 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Consecutive errors by the third baseman and a walk to Fusco set up Bill Weitzel with the bases loaded and one out. Just as he did 8 days earlier, Weitzel delivered with a walk-off base hit plating two runs and claiming the 14-13 victory. Clark, 1-1, earned the win in relief. Fusco and Clark led the Blue Devil attack with 3 hits on the day. Tim Parsell laced 4 hits and Shane Heltz and Nate Mead had 3 apiece.
