SWEENEY 75th AT D-III MEET

Jim Sweeney finished 75th Saturday at the 2003 Division III Cross Country Championships at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.

Sweeney, a senior from Albany N.Y./Guilderland H.S., covered the 8,000 meters in 26:26.3. That was 2:12 behind overall race winner Josh Moen, a junior from Wartburg (Iowa) College.

Calvin College won the team championship.

PREVIOUS MEETS

Nov. 15, NCAA Atlantic Regional -- Jim Sweeney finished qualified for the NCAA Division III championship meet by finishing eighth at the Atlantic Regional meet Saturday at Letchworth State Park. Sweeney covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:34.2 -- a 5:09 per mile pace. He will represent Fredonia State next Saturday at the NCAA championships at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.

Nov. 8, NYSCTC Championship -- The Fredonia State men 11th of 15 teams competing in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference cross country championship meet at Saratoga Springs State Park. Jim Sweeney was the best overall finisher for the Blue Devils. The senior from Albany/Guilderland was 8th out of 133 runners in a time of 26:05 for 8,000 meters. The next best finisher for the Blue Devil men was Kevin Buzzelli at 58th, followed by A.J. Caputa (75th), Jason Smith (83rd) and Chris Johnson (124th).

Oct. 25, SUNYAC Championships -- James Sweeney was 10th overall Saturday in the SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Championship meet at Fortin Park in Oneonta. A senior from Albany's Guilderland H.S., Sweeney was clocked in 27:03.9 for 8,000 meters. The 10th place finish earned him a spot on the All SUNYAC team. The Blue Devils were ninth overall as a team with 191 points. Geneseo scored a perfect 15 to claim the team title with Ted Turner showing the way in 25:35.5.

Oct. 15, Edinboro Rag Relay -- James Sweeney was the third fastest runner overall at the Edinboro University Rag Relay. Sweeney ran four 1,500-meter splits in 18:34 aggregate. His first -- and fastest -- split of the day was 4:30, fifth overall. He followed that up with runs of 4:39, 4:42 and 4:43. A.J. Caputa (20:01, 12th) and Jason Smith (20:11, 15th) were teamed with Sweeney. They combined for a 58:46 clocking, best among the Blue Devils and fourth overall. Others to run for the Blue Devils were Jack Brunecz (20:05, 13th), Chris Johnson (20:09, 14th), Kevin Buzzelli (20:16, 17th), Dave Bateman (20:28, 18th), Chris Mills (20:43, 19th) and Dave Mink (22:27, 20th).

Oct. 11, Slippery Rock Invitational -- James Sweeney covered 8,000 meters in 26:26 to win the Slippery Rock Invitational. Chris Mills was 9th overall in 27:31. He was followed by Jason Smith (19th, 28:49), Dave Mink (20th, 28:54), Kevin Buzzelli (29th, 29:29), Jack Brunecz (33rd, 29:57) and Dave Bateman (36th, 30:22).

Oct. 4, Geneseo Invitational at Letchworth State Park -- Fredonia State senior James Sweeney was 17th overall. Timed in 27:11.71 for 8,000 meters, Sweeney finished ahead of junior Chris Mills (25th, 27:31.50), freshman Kevin Buzzelli (62nd, 28:22.18), sophomore David Mink (70th, 28:35.32) and sophomore Jack Brunecz (99th, 29:11.61) to account for Fredonia State's top five.

Sept. 27, Fredonia State Invitational on campus -- The rains began to pick up as the men took to the muddy course for the only home meet of the season -- the Fredonia State Invitational. Keuka's Andy Cloke won in a time of 26:49 for eight kilometers, but that didn't keep the Blue Devils from winning the team title. A pair of Fredonia State runners, Jim Sweeney (27:37) and Chris Mills (28:18) finished second and third, respectively. David Mink (28:52) was sixth, DAve Bateman (29:18) 10th and Kevin Buzzelli (29:25) 11th to round out Fredonia State's top five. The Blue Devils outscored Erie Community College, Alfred State, Hobart and Keuka.

Sept. 20, Allegheny College Invitational at Meadville, Pa. -- James Sweeney, a senior, was third overall in 26:38, an average of 5:22 per mile on the 8,000-meter course. Chris Mills, a junior, finished 10th in 27:29, sophomore Anthony Caputa was 35th in 28:51, freshman Jason Smith 36th in 28:53 and freshman Kevin Buzzelli 38th in 28:56. Rounding out Fredonia State top seven were sophomore Jack Brunecz and sophomore Dave Mink.

Sept. 13, Rochester Triangular Meet -- James Sweeney was first overall over the 6,400-meter Genesee Valley Park course in a triangular meet Saturday with Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester. Sweeney, a senior from Albany/Guilderland, was timed in 20:47 -- an average of 5:13 per mile. But despite his effort, the Blue Devils were third in team competition. RIT edged U of R, 33-34, with the Blue Devils trailing with 71 points. Fredonia State's top five, after Sweeney, were Chris Mills (17th, 21:56), Kevin Buzzelli (23rd, 22:20), Dave Bateman (26th, 22:30) and Jason Smith (27th, 22:54).

Sept. 6, Bill Sudeck Classic at Case Western Reserve -- James Sweeney (Albany/Guilderland) finished third overall and the Blue Devils sixth of 12 teams at the third annual Bill Sudeck Classic held by Case Western Reserve University. Sweeney, a senior, was timed in 26:34 over the eight-kilometer. Chris Mills (Auburn) was 13th (27:58.00), Dave Bateman (Rochester/Gates Chili) was 34th in 28:58, Kevin Buzzelli (Grand Island) was 48th in 29:29 and Jack Brunecz (Jamestown/Southwestern) finished 59th in 29:52 to round out Fredonia State's top five.
