Fredonia State Athletics
Mission Statement

Philosophy and Objectives

The program of intercollegiate athletics at SUNY Fredonia is organized and conducted as an integral part of the educational program of the institution. The athletic program is also related to the "physical education" and "sport" component of the institution's program of study providing opportunities for the highly‑skilled student to participate with others of similar interests, abilities, and needs.

The administration, leadership, and supervision involved in athletics are comparable to those of other phases of the institution's educational services and programs. The coaches in the intercollegiate sports program should preferably be regularly‑employed faculty members of the University. Qualified, part‑time coaches, outside of the University are sought when there are no qualified, full‑time staff members in either the department or the University itself.

There shall be no attempt to classify intercollegiate sports as minor or major. It is the belief of the department and of the institution that all sports should be classified as significant. The criteria should be the interests and needs of the students and the university community and not merely the extent of the spectator appeal.

Mission Statement of the Intercollegiate Athletic Program

The Fredonia State Department of Athletics strives to provide opportunities for members of the student body to participate in a competitive athletic program that encourages the development of sportsmanship and positive societal values.  Within the limitations of its resources, the Department will furnish a safe, challenging and supportive environment in which every participant has an opportunity to develop his/her talents to the best of his/her ability.  While team performance may be of great interest to members of the surrounding communities, the impact of competition on the student/participant will be of paramount importance in any decision regarding scheduling, travel, safety, etc.
