SUNYAC honors Blue Devil quartet; all-Region for pair
GENESEO ENDS BLUE DEVIL SEASON
Erik Swanson scored two goals and David Aguado had one goal to lift Geneseo over Fredonia State, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Northeast Tournament at Geneseo.
Seeded No. 5 in the six-team bracket, the Blue Devils (12-7-3) forged a 1-1 tie on an unassisted goal by Alex Parker at 37:38 of the first half when his blast off the crossbar rebounded back into the net.
Aguado countered before halftime for the No. 4-seeded Blue Knights (10-6-3), who won an earlier meeting, 2-0, at Fredonia on Sept. 21. Geneseo goalkeeper Chris Stock kept his team ahead when he stopped Fredonia State's Mitch Irish on a penalty kick with 33:36 left in the game.
Swanson added his insurance goal with 48 seconds remaining to set up his team's quarterfinal match at No. 1 seed and final four host Hobart on Saturday.
It was the the final game for three Fredonia State seniors: midfielder Nate Zinteck, defender Tim Wyand and goalkeeper Adam Flanders.
The Blue Devils were returning to the ECAC Tournament after a one-year absence. They were also making their second post-season tournament of the season. They advanced to the championship game of the SUNYAC Tournament before falling to Cortland, 1-0, in double-overtime.

Cortland three-peats as SUNYAC champs
Christian Peters scored on a direct kick one minute, 28 seconds into the second overtime to lead the third-seeded Cortland mens soccer team to a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded Fredonia in the SUNYAC finals Saturday afternoon at the Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta.
Cortland captured its third straight conference title and earned an automatic NCAA tournament bid. The Red Dragons (15-4-2) tied the school record for wins.
The Blue Devils (12-6-3) outshot the Red Dragons 7-2 and held a decisive 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half. They also had two good chances turned back at the Cortland goal line. The scoreless drama came to close when Peters converted on a direct free kick for his eight goal of the season .
Sean Trask started in goal for the Red Dragons and made six saves in 97:29 before giving way to Ross Morelli, who did not have to make a save in earning the win. Matt Borchard stopped two shots in a losing effort the Blue Devils.
Nate Zinteck, Mitch Irish and Tim Wyand were chosen to the all-tournament team from Fredonia State.

Devils upset No. 1 seed
Matt Mahaffey's second-half goal was the difference in Fredonia State's 2-1 SUNYAC Tournament semifinal victory Friday over the No. 1 seeded Plattsburgh Cardinals at Hall of Fame Field in Oneonta.
Tim Cupello scored midway through the first half for the Blue Devils (12-5-3), who'll meet the Cortland Red Dragons in the championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Red Dragons (14-4-2) defeated Geneseo, 2-0, in Friday's other semifinal.
The winner Saturday receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Blue Devils took the early momentum Friday on Cupello's goal -- his seventh of the season -- at 16:25 of the first half. Mahaffey earned an assist.
The momentum slipped away on a game-tying goal by Plattsburgh's Craig Carroll with 25 seconds left in the first half, the only one of 14 Cardinal shots to hit the net. Fredonia State goalkeeper Matt Borchard was credited with five saves.
Mahaffey's goal was his seventh of the season -- one in each of the last four games. It came off a corner cross from Garrett Hauschild. Mahaffey and Cupello share the team lead with seven goals each.
The Blue Devils took nine shots in the conteset, three by Mitch Irish. Plattsburgh goalkeeper Jeff Giammatri made four saves. In addition, Plattsburgh took five corner kicks to one by the Blue Devils.
As it turned out, both lower seeds won Friday. The Blue Devils entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Cortland as No. 3 as well as the defending tournament champ. The Red Dragons, coached by former Fredonia State head coach Mike Middleton, defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, when the teams met Oct. 19 at Cortland.
The Blue Devils were a similar position against the Cardinals (15-4-0), who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region. The Cardinals won an earlier meeting, 2-0, on Oct. 11 at Fredonia, only to have Blue Devils win the rematch.

Devils advance to SUNYAC semifinals
Fredonia State scored twice in the first half, then hung onto the lead to defeat the Brockport Golden Eagles, 2-1, in a SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday afternoon at Steele Hall Field.
Freshman forward Matt Mahaffey and junior midfielder Jordan Manetta scored the goals and goalkeeper Matt Borchard made four saves for the Blue Devils (11-5-3), who'll advanced to a Friday afternoon meeting against Plattsburgh at Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta. Plattsburgh is the No. 1 seed, while Fredonia State is No. 4.
For Mahaffey, his goal with 37:57 left in the first half was his sixth of the season -- one in each of the last three goals. Nate Zinteck and Michael Mace were credited with assists.
Manetta made it 2-0 with 8:24 left in the half with his third goal. Mitch Irish set up the goal.
The Golden Eagles (6-10-2), seeded No. 5, cut their deficit in half on a goal by Josh Schubert with 31:11 showing on the second-half clock. Greg Dini was credited with an assist.
Brockport goalkeeper Shane Sutton made eight saves, while his team was outshot 19-8.
Borchard SUNYAC Player of the Week
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) named Fredonia States sophomore goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) the men's SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending October 26, 2003.
Borchard shutout Buffalo State Wednesday to help his team clinch the 4th seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament. Saturday he stopped six shots in a tough 1-0 road win over RIT. Borchard has recorded five shutouts in 10 games this season. He leads the conference with a save percentage of .880 and is tied for second in goals against average (0.86). Fredonia is 10-4-3 this season and ranked 8th in the northeast region.
Hauschild SUNYAC Player of the Week
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced Fredonia States Garrett Hauschild (Skaneateles/Skaneateles H.S.) as the SUNYAC Mens Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending October 5, 2003.
Hauschild netted a pair of goals, including the game winner, in a 5-1 victory over Keuka College. He also added three goals in a conference win against SUNYIT. He finished the week with five goals in three games as the Blue Devils also battled conference opponent New Paltz to a scoreless tie.
Hobart 2, Blue Devils 1
Game 18, Nov. 1 at Geneva, N.Y. -- The Blue Devils were unable to overcome two first-half goals by Hobart in a non-conference loss. Matt Mahaffey scored the lone Blue Devil goal for the second straight game. His tally in the 20th minute came off a rebound of a shot by Michael Mace. It was Mahaffey's fifth goal of the season. Matt Borchard and Adam Flanders combined to make three saves for the Blue Devils (10-5-3).

Game 17, Oct. 25 at Rochester -- Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Borchard posted his fifth shutout of the season in the Blue Devils' 1-0 non-conference victory at Rochester Institute of Technology. Freshman forward Matt Mahaffey scored the game's only game, an unassisted tally just 10:30 into the contest. It was Mahaffey's fourth goal of the season. Borchard stopped six shots for the shutout. The Blue Devils improved to 10-4-3, their 10th straight season with double-digit wins.

Game 16, Oct. 22 at Fredonia -- The Blue Devils locked up a SUNYAC playoff berth with a 3-0 home win. Senior midfielder Nate Zinteck scored two first-half goals and sophomore midfielder Patrick McWhorter added an insurance tally late in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Borchard made four saves in order to post the shutout. Zinteck's first goal came with 24:14 left in the first half, assisted by freshman forward Matt Mahaffey. It became 2-0 Fredonia State when Zinteck scored on the rebound of his own penalty kick with 3:44 left in the first half. As a result, he moved up to No. 16 on Fredonia States all-time points list with 47 points. McWhorter's goal came with 2:35 left in the game. Junior midfielder Tim Cupello picked up the assist. The Blue Devils had a 22-6 advantage in shots taken. By winning, they ensured themselves at least the fourth seed -- and a first-round home game -- in the six-team SUNYAC Tournament which starts Nov. 4.
Cortland 3, Blue Devils 0
Game 15, Oct. 18 at Cortland, N.Y. -- Christian Peters had two goals and Sean Trask made seven saves as Cortland topped the Blue Devils in SUNYAC action. The Blue Devils had scoring chances in the 10th minute and the 56th minute, each time on a header by Tim Cupello. Both shots were stopped, with the second trickling just wide. Matt Borchard was called on to make three saves in the first 80 minutes. Adam Flanders finished the game in the Fredonia State goal. The Red Dragons outshot their guests, 19-17.
Blue Devils 2, Oswego 0
Game 14, Oct. 17 at Oswego, N.Y. -- The Blue Devils used goals by Jordan Manetta and Tim Cupello to earn a 2-0 decision over Oswego State in SUNYAC play. Manetta scored on an unassisted goal at 25:39 of the first half when he intercepted an Oswego clearing attempt and put a shot into the far corner of the net. Victor Ianni assisted Cupello with a second-half goal at the 53:53 mark. The Fredonia defense held Oswego to only two shots on goal for the game allowing goalkeeper Adam Flanders to gain his first -- and the team's fourth -- shutout of the season.
Plattsburgh 2, Blue Devils 0
Game 13, Oct. 11 at Fredonia -- Goals by Tim Stanley and Mike Figliola and the goalkeeping of Jeff Adams enabled the Plattsburgh Cardinals to remain unbeaten in SUNYAC competition with a 2-0 road win over the Blue Devils. Stanley scored on a header 11:18 into the game, assisted by Jason Sousa, and Figliola made good on a penalty kick at 34:55. Adams made the lead stand with six saves as the Cardinals improved to 6-0-0 in the conference, 11-2-0 overall. Senior defender Tim Wyand and sophomore midfielder Michael Mace had two shots each for the Blue Devils (7-3-3, 3-2-1), who had allowed only one goal in their last five games -- including three straight shutouts. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Borchard made 10 saves. The Devils were outshot, 21-12.
Blue Devils 4, Potsdam 0
Game 12, Oct. 10 at Fredonia -- Nate Zinteck figured in every goal Friday during the Blue Devils' SUNYAC home win. A senior midfielder from Syracuse, N.Y. and Nottingham H.S., Zinteck had a goal and three assists while junior goalkeeper Matt Borchard made three saves to earn the shutout. Sophomore midfielder Michael Mace, senior defender Mitch Irish and sophomore midfielder Victor Ianni also had goals for the Blue Devils (7-2-3, 3-1-1), who have posted three straight shutouts. Mace received credit for the game-winning goal. The Blue Devils outshot the Bears, 23-5. The five-point game by Zinteck gave him 11 points this season and 43 points as a Blue Devil. As a result, he moved into 19th place on the team's all-time scoring list, surpassing Frank Harze's 42 points.
Blue Devils 12, SUNYIT 0
Game 11, Oct. 4 at Utica -- Fredonia State made it 12-for-12 with 12 goals against SUNYIT. The Blue Devils won for the 12th straight time, against no losses, in the all-time series against SUNYIT (formerly Utica-Rome) in the cold and rain of Utica. Garrett Hauschild led the way with three goals while nine other players had one goal each, among them goalkeeper Adam Flanders, who scored on a penalty kick. Other Blue Devils with goals were Mitch Irish, Brian Abrams, Nate Zinteck, Tim Cupello, Jason Dion, Jordan Manetta, Tim Wyand and Andy Soltiz. Dion also had three assists. Flanders also had an assist and was not called on to make a single save. SUNYIT took just two shots, while the Blue Devils peppered 25 shots on the SUNYIT goalkeeper. Hauschild took over the team goal-scoring lead with his hat trick. He has six goals this season, one more than Cupello. For Manetta, it was his first at Fredonia State following his transfer from Herkimer C.C.
Blue Devils 0, New Paltz 0
Game 10, Oct. 3 at New Paltz, N.Y. -- Neither team could capitalize on its chance Friday in a 0-0 SUNYAC tie between the Blue Devils and the New Paltz Hawks. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Borchard made eight saves over 110 minutes -- 90 minutes of regulation, and two 10 minute overtimes. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils (5-2-3, 1-1-1) took 11 shots, including three by junior forward Jason Dion. The Hawks (2-5-2, 1-3-1) took 17 shots.
Blue Devils 5, Keuka 1
Game 9, Sept. 30 at Fredonia -- Freshman forward Matt Mahaffey and sophomore forward Garrett Hauschild had two goals each in the Blue Devils' rain-drenched 5-1 non-conference victory over the Keuka Storm. Mahaffey also had an assist to go along with his second and third goals of the season -- all in the last two games. Hauschild also scored for the second and third time this season, while freshman midfielder Michael Mallia registered his first collegiate goal with a perfectly placed corner kick late in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Adam Flanders made seven saves, including a diving one-handed stop in the first half while the game was still scoreless. Keuka's Kwaku Boasiako broke the tie late in the first half, which was played in driving rainstorm following a lightning delay before the opening kickoff. The rains let up in the second half, but the Storm was unable to weather the barrage of Blue Devil offense. It began with a goal by Mahaffey, the result of a deflection off a Keuka player less than five minutes into the second half. Hauschild made it 2-1 Fredonia State at 26:54 off a short cross by Mahaffey. He followed the eventual game-winner with his second goal of the game at 21:49, this time following a upfield pass from sophomore midfielder Pat McWhorter. Mahaffey made it 4-1, Fredonia State, at 18:16, assisted by senior midfielder Nate Zinteck. Mallia closed the scoring with 2:42 left when he hooked a corner kick into the top left corner out of reach of Keuka goalkeeper Chris Aikens (7 saves).
Blue Devils 3, Alfred 0
Game 8, Sept. 24 at Fredonia -- Matt Mahaffey had one goal and one assist while Matt Borchard was called on to make six saves in the Blue Devils' home non-conference victory Wednesday over Alfred University. Mahaffey put the Blue Devils (4-2-2) in front with his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute of the first half. Alex Parker earned the first of his two assists in the game. Michael Mace was also credited with an assist. Tim Cupello put the Blue Devils up 2-0 with his team-leading fourth goal of the season with 16:23 left in the 90-minute contest. Parker picked up his second assist of the game, while Mahaffey earned his second point -- an assist -- on a goal by Mitch Irish with 1:24 to play. For Borchard, it was his first shutout of the season and his third in two seasons at Fredonia State. Alfred's goalkeeping tandem of Jim Roberts and William Brown combined for eight saves.
Geneseo 2, Blue Devils 0
Game 7, Sept. 21 at Fredonia -- Dave Fink scored one goal in each half Sunday and Chris Stock made seven saves as Geneseo blanked the Blue Devils. Fink broke through the Devil defense and beat goalkeeper Matt Borchard for an unassisted tally at 33:13 of the first half. Then, just 44 seconds into the second half, Fink lofted a short ball over the head of Borchard, who had come out to defend and was unable to leap and make the stop. Brian Amick was credited with an assist. The Blue Devils (3-2-2, 1-1-0) had their best chances in the first half, but Stock was equal to the task. Fredonia State's Jordan Manetta was credited with three shots, while three teammates had two shots each. Borchard made seven saves for the Blue Devils.
Blue Devils 2, Brockport 1 (OT)
Game 6, Sept. 20 at Fredonia -- A header by Garrett Hauschild with 2:24 left in the first overtime lifted the Blue Devils to a 2-1 victory in a SUNYAC opener for both teams. Hauschild's goal, his first of the season, came off a header pass by Nate Zinteck from about 10 yards out. Matt Borchard was credited with six saves in the Fredonia State net. The Blue Devils (3-1-2, 1-0-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tim Cupello, his third of the season. Cupello cashed in following a flurry of action in front of Brockport goalkeeper Shane Sutton. Fredonia State's Tim Wyand was credited with an assist. The Blue Devils were credited with 17 shots, 12 in the second half and overtime. The Golden Eagles took 14 shots, but just four after halftime.
Blue Devils 1, Allegheny 1
Game 5, Sept. 10 at Meadville, Pa. -- A late goal following a goal-box flurry ruined Fredonia States bid at victory in a non-conference match against Allegheny College. Alleghenys Marc Sciulli drilled home a rebound with 2:28 left in regulation. The goal followed by two scoreless 10-minute overtimes resulted in a 1-1 tie. Allegheny outshot the visiting Blue Devils 12-7 in the first half, but found itself in a 1-0 deficit on the first collegiate goal by freshman Alex Parker. Parker took a cross on the back post from sophomore midfielder Victor Ianni and snuck it past Allegheny goalkeeper Brian Manougian into the side-netting with :29 left in the first half. Manougian finished the game with one save as the Gators held a whopping 27-11 advantage in shots. Blue Devil sophomore goalie Matt Borchard had nine saves.
Blue Devils 1, Houghton 1
Game 4, Sept. 6 at Fredonia -- Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas) scored the game-tying goal with 15:44 remaining in regulation in the Blue Devils' 1-1 tie Saturday with Houghton in the second round of the Days Inn Classic. The Blue Devils (2-1-1) earned the tournament championship --- their third straight Days Inn title --- based on goals differential. They scored five goals in the two tournament games. Houghton scored two. Cupello's counter came off a header following a set-up from Bryon Thoin (Buffalo/St. Joseph's). Adam Flanders (Liverpool) and Tim Cody (Webster/Webster Schroeder) split time in the Fredonia State net. They combined for 11 saves. The Blue Devils put 12 shots on net --- Houghton took 23. Fredonia State freshman Brian Annechino (Rochester/Penfield) was named tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Cupello, Mitch Irish (Fairport) and Jason Dion (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius).
Blue Devils 4, Juniata 1
Game 3, Sept. 5 at Fredonia -- Jason Dion (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored twice while Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas) and Michael Mace (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) also tallied for the Blue Devils (2-1-0) in the first round of the Days Inn Classic. Adam Flanders (Liverpool/Liverpool) started in the Fredonia State goal and stopped two shots in the first 76 minutes. Tim Cody (Webster/Webster Schroeder) came on in relief between the pipes. The Blue Devils had a 20-9 advantage in shots. In the other mens game Friday, a goal by Rusty Knight (Thomasville, N.C.) with six seconds left in the second overtime lifted the Houghton men to the 1-0 victory over Warner Southern of Lake Wales, Fla.
St. Lawrence 2, Blue Devils 0
Game 2, Aug. 30 at Canton, N.Y. -- The Blue Devils managed just one shot in a 2-0 loss to No. 4 ranked and host St. Lawrence in the championship game of the first Lotto Classic. Charlie Bogosian and Charlie Bour scored for St. Lawrence. Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas) managed the only shot on St. Lawrence goalkeeper Jordan James. Fredonia State goalkeeper Adam Flanders (Liverpool) made five stops. Mitch Irish (Fairport), Nate Zinteck (Syracuse/Nottingham) and Tim Wyand (Rochester/Penfield) made the Lotto Classic all-tournament team.
Blue Devils 2, Clarkson 1
Game 1, Aug. 29 at Canton, N.Y. -- Brian Abrams (Brockport) scored with 18 minutes left in regulation to put the Blue Devils over Clarkson, 2-1, in the Lotto Classic at St. Lawrence University. Brandon Derkacz (Hamburg) also scored for the Blue Devils (1-0-0), who trailed 1-0 on a Clarkson goal by Ismael Mohammad early in the second half. Derkacz answered five minutes later at the 57:42 mark. Nate Zinteck (Syracuse/Nottingham) earned the assist. Mitch Irish (Fairport) assisted on the goal by Abrams, which came at 72:25. Adam Flanders (Liverpool) earned the victory the Fredonia State goal. He saw five Clarkson shots. The Blue Devils took nine shots.
