HORSINGTON DOUBLES AT SUNYACs

Scott Horsington is the undisputed SUNYAC diving champion.

The Fredonia State freshman from Rochester (Churhville-Chili H.S.) completed his SUNYAC sweep with a victory Saturday, Feb. 14, off the three-meter board at the Erie Community Flickinger Center in Buffalo.

His score of 462.70 points exceeded the NCAA Division III cut for the event. On Thursday, he scored 453 points -- also above the NCAA qualifying standard -- in the one-meter springboard competition.

The two SUNYAC wins put Horsington's 2003-04 record at 22-0 in the two diving disciplines.

The Fredonia State men had one other top eight finish during the three days of competition. James Barrett, Chris Oaks, Marcelino Jaime and Chris Mumbach combined for sixth place (7:56.13) in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The team, in only its second season after a 12-year hiatus, was comprised most of the season of six members. Yet despite the smallish squad, the Blue Devils scored more team points this year (176) compared to one year ago (158).

AWARDS

ECAC honors Horsington

Fredonia State diver Scott Horsington is the ECAC Division III Diver of the Week.

Horsington, a freshman from Rochester, N.Y., and Churchville-Chili High School, became a solid choice for the ECAC award when he defeated the defending SUNYAC champion in the Blue Devils' most recent meet, Jan. 17 against Geneseo at the Steele Hall Natatorium.

The victory over the Geneseo diver enabled Horsington to remain unbeaten in every competition this season in both the 1-meter and 3-meter disciplines -- a streak that covers eight meets.

The honor is the first weekly award given to a Fredonia State male swimmer or diver in the two seasons since the team returned to collegiate competition (the sport was dropped after 1989-90 and returned in 2002-03). Paula Kaus, also a diver, received a similar ECAC citation representing the Fredonia State women last season.
