Devils split home meet
Fredonia State defeated Alfred University but fell to Penn State Behrend in the Mary Phillips Invitational held Feb. 6 at Steele Hall. Henry Perez and Charles Infurna were double winners. Perez won the 55 meters (6.72) and the 200 meters (23.77). Infurna was tops in the shot put (12.68 meters) and the weight throw (15.47 meters).
James Sweeney (1,500 meters, 4:18.67) and Aaron Johnson (400 meters, :53.81) were winners of one event each.
Jan. 31, Spartan Relays
Freshman Henry Perez, competing in his first college meet, excelled at the Case Western Reserve Spartain Relays. He had a long jump of 21 feet, 6 ¼ inches to qualify for the ECAC meet. He also turned in New York State Collegiate Track Conference and SUNYAC qualifying times in the 55 meters (:6.78) and the 200 meters (:23.49). James Sweeney, a senior, qualified for the NYSCTC meet in the 5,000 meters (15:44) while junior Chris Mills, junior Dave Bateman and freshman Kevin Ryan turned qualified for the SUNYAC meet in separate events. Mills nailed down a spot in the 5,000 meters (16:14), Bateman in the 800 meters (2:03.2), and Ryan in the pole vault (3.66 meters). In addition, senior Charles Infurna won the weight throw.
Jan. 24, Fredonia Early Open
Charles Infurna won the men's weight throw with a toss of 49 feet, 6 1/2 inches Saturday during the Fredonia Early Open at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse. Infurna, a senior, also was sixth in the shot put (40-7 3/4). In addition, Aaron Johnson was third in the 400 meters (54.61), Dave Bateman third in the 500 meters (1:12.35), and James Sweeney third in the 1,500 meters (4:07.70) and fourth in the 3,000 meters (9:16.40).
Dec. 6-7, Golden Flash Gala
Jim Sweeney qualified for ECAC, state and conference meets with his 3,000-meter performance at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. A senior from Albany, Sweeney was clocked in 8:48.47. It was a personal best and good for third place in the event. He also finished sixth in the mile run in 4:26. He will partipate in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference meet, the State University of New York Athletic Conference meet, and the ECAC meet later in the winter season. Charles Infurna qualified for the NYSCTC and SUNYAC meets in the weight throw with a toss of 14.47 meters. Aaron Johnson qualfied for the SUNYAC meet in two events: the 200 meters (24.14 seconds) and the 400 meters (53.23 seconds). Dave Bateman was Fredonia State's other SUNYAC qualifier with a 2:40.11 clocking in the 1,000 meters.
