Erik M. Barkley

Erik Barkley

Erik Barkley enters his second year as the head athletic trainer for the Blue Devils. At Fredonia, Erik supervises the athletic training department as well primarily providing athletic training coverage for men's soccer, men's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, and softball.  In addition to his athletic training duties, Barkley teaches in the department of Health, Wellness and Recreation.

A native of northwestern Pennsylvania, Barkley holds national and state certifications in athletic training and performance enhancement. He attended Smethport (Pa.) Area Junior-Senior High School and Slippery Rock University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science/Athletic Training. At the end of his senior year at Slippery Rock, Barkley served a three-month stint as an athletic training intern for the Pittsburgh Steelers, immediately before and after the NFL Draft.

He enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University and obtained a Master's of Science degree with a concentration in Nutrition and Exercise Science. While at SEMO he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for two years, primarily with men's basketball and baseball. After leaving Southeast, Erik traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands where he spent six months working as an orthopedic assistant in a private clinic on the island of St. Thomas.

In December 2002, Barkley was named an assistant athletic trainer at Kenyon College, where he spent five years. While at Kenyon his primary sport duties included men's soccer, men's basketball, men's lacrosse, and softball. In addition, he planned and oversaw the pre- and post-season men's basketball strength and conditioning programs, as well as performing duties in the Kenyon student health center.

Alicia M. Simmonds

Alicia Scharett

Alicia M. Simmonds joined the Fredonia State athletic training staff in June 2007.

She is a May 2006 graduate of Wingate University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. She earned a master's degree in athletic training in spring 2007 from California University of Pennsylvania. She also holds certification as a Performance Enhancement Specialist.

Simmonds was a graduate assistant at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., during the 2006-07 academic year. She served as a student assistant for several teams while attending Wingate University.

In addition to her collegiate experience, Simmonds held an internship with the Charlotte Checkers professional hockey team and has volunteered with the Pittsburgh Passion women's professional football team. She has also worked as a athletic trainer at road races and at high school sporting events.
