REMUS RECEIVES SUNYAC CHANCELLOR'S AWARD

REMUS, SALINAS SELECTED TO SUNYAC FIRST TEAM
FREDONIA, N.Y. - A pair of Fredonia State midfielders, Katie Remus and Anita Salinas, have been selected 2003 First Team All SUNYAC in a vote of league coaches.
Remus, a junior and team co-captain from Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island H.S., registered 18 points on six goals and six assists. She had three goals and four assists in conference games. Her three-season total of 40 points (13 goals, 14 assists) is seventh on the Fredonia State all-time points list. The 14 assists are third most by a Blue Devil, five behind all-time leader and former teammate Jennifer Robinson (1999-02).
Salinas, a sophomore from Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena H.S., accumulated 18 points – six in the conference – on seven goals and four assists. She scored one game-winning goal in the conference, two in non-conference games. With 34 points in two seasons, she is tied for ninth on Fredonia State’s all-time scoring list.
Remus and Salinas are the first Blue Devils to make First Team since Robinson was selected in 2000. In addition, this is the first season since 1994 that Fredonia State has had more than one player on the First Team. Jennifer White and Barb Zuber were the 1994 honorees.
CASE NAMED TOP COACH IN CONFERENCE
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Fredonia State’s Chris Case was selected SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year at the annual coaches meeting Nov. 10 in Syracuse. He is the second Fredonia State coach to receive the award.
Case guided the Blue Devils to their first-ever SUNYAC Tournament appearance in only his second year as head coach. He took the team from a 2-6-2-conference record his first season to 5-4-1 in 2003. The Blue Devils also posted 11 wins for only the third time in the 18-year history of the program, and recorded back-to-back winning seasons after seven straight years at .500 or below.
Case is a native of Fairport, N.Y., and a 2001 Fredonia State graduate. He played four seasons as a goalkeeper with the Blue Devils and earned All SUNYAC and ECAC Northeast Region honors. He was also a dean’s list student and made the SUNYAC All-Academic team while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a concentration in mathematics.
Prior to this season, Lisa B. Siegel was the only previous Fredonia State women’s soccer coach to receive the SUNYAC award. She was named as the conference’s Co-Coach of the Year in 1994.
Case is the second Fredonia State coach to receive a SUNYAC Coach of the Year award this fall. He joins women’s volleyball coach Geoff Braun in earning the distinction.
Devils sent packing after 3-0 setback
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh ended Fredonia State’s season Monday afternoon, 3-0, in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament.
Three different players had goals for the Cardinals (14-4-0).
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 11-7-1, their best finish since 1994. Eleven wins is the second most in school history to the 1994 team’s 12-7-2 record.
The Blue Devils were playing in the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time.
Fredonia State junior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey made six saves. Her team was outshot, 22-2. Junior midfielder Katie Remus and freshman midfielder Tracy Grimes took the Blue Devil shots.
Goals by Kaleen McCool at 20:33 and Teresa Barber at 36:38 gave Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead at halftime. Gena Rosenbaum made it 3-0 at 58:02. She also had an assist. Goalkeeper Sara Larouche was called on to make just one save.
It was the final collegiate game for three Fredonia State seniors: midfielder Mikelle Huber, and defenders Cari Hegyi and Erin Bauer.
The Blue Devils were seeded No. 6, while the Cardinals were No. 3. Plattsburgh won the previous meeting this season, 5-1, also in Plattsburgh.

Blue Devils 3, SUNYIT 0
Game 18, Oct. 25 at Fredonia -- The Blue Devils secured their first-ever SUNYAC Tournament berth with a 3-0 victory over SUNYIT on Steele Hall Field. Senior forward Mikelle Huber, sophomore forward Jessica Weiser and junior midfielder Katie Remus had the Fredonia State goals within a seven-minute span of the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Judd was required to make only one save to post her second straight shutout. By winning, the Blue Devils (11-6-1, 5-4-1) overtook Oswego on the final day of the SUNYAC regular season in the two-team battle for the No. 6 tournament seed. Playing in her final home game, Huber drilled a shot off the crossbar from beyond the 25-yard line. The ball rolled in behind SUNYIT goalkeeper Robin Dole (22 saves) with 27:40 left on the Steele Hall Field clock. It was the third goal by Huber this season, one in each of the last three games. Remus was credited with an assist. Weiser added the first insurance marker -- her sixth of the season -- by nudging in a rebound at the 23:35 mark, assisted by senior defender Cari Hegyi. Remus made it 3-0 at 20:26 with her sixth goal of the season, giving her 40 points in three seasons -- seventh on the Fredonia State all-time scoring list. Freshman forward Tracey Grimes assisted on the Remus goal. In addition to Huber and Hegyi, defender Erin Bauer was also making her final home appearance. The 11 wins in a season equals the second most in school history. In addition, the five conference surpasses the 2000 team's previous school-best total of four.

Game 17, Oct. 22 at Fredonia -- Three different players had goals while freshman goalkeeper Courtney Judd made six saves for her first collegiate shutout in only her second start. She was playing in place of injured starter Brianna Falvey. Sophomore midfielder Anita Salinas opened the scoring at the 28:37 mark. Freshman midfielder Tracy Grimes earned an assist on the goal, the seventh of the season for Salinas. Sophomore forward Jamie Pricola made it 2-0 Blue Devils at 31:50. It was also the seventh goal of the year for Pricola, who shares the team lead with Salinas. Senior defender Cari Hegyi picked up an assist. Senior forward Mikelle Huber added an insurance goal early in the second half. It was her second goal in as many games and second of the season. Sophomore forward Jessica Weiser was credited with an assist.
Blue Devils 2, Cortland 2 (2 OT)
Game 16, Oct. 18 at Fredonia -- Senior forward Mikelle Huber had one goal and one assist as the Blue Devils earned an important point with a 2-2 SUNYAC tie with the Cortland Red Dragons. Sophomore forward Amy Wenzel netted the game-tying goal while junior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey registered seven saves for the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils outshot the Red Dragons, 21-14. Down 1-0, Huber countered for the Blue Devils with a header following a pass from junior midfielder Katie Remus at 28:55 of the first half. It was Huber's first goal of the season and the 10th of her career. Thirty seconds later, the Red Dragons were back in the lead. Wenzel's equalizer came at 37:44 of the second half. Huber set up the score with a crossing pass from the corner following a long run up the right side. While the game ended in a tie, a shootout was held for potential playoff seeding purposes. The Blue Devils won the shootout, 4-3, as Huber netted the deciding tally.
Blue Devils 2, Oswego 0
Game 15, Oct. 17 at Fredonia -- The Blue Devils used a quick score and strong defense to defeat Oswego. Jessica Weiser scored on an assist from Mikelle Huber at 1:48 into the game to give Fredonia an early lead. The defense came through the rest of the way, allowing only three shots on goal for the entire game to preserve the victory. Goalie Brianna Falvey earned her third shutout of the year. Katie Remus provided an insurance goal at 22:58 of the second half, knocking in a corner kick off the foot of Tracy Grimes.
Plattsburgh 5, Blue Devils 1
Game 14, Oct. 11 at Plattsburgh, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Anita Salinas scored the lone goal in the Blue Devils' 5-1 SUNYAC road loss Saturday to the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The goal was the sixth of the year for Salinas, who also has four assists. The 16 points equals her entire total during the 2002 season. The 32 career points puts her No. 8 on Fredonia State's all-time points list -- two points short of the No. 7 spot held by Kristi Bunch (1989-92). Freshman midfielder Tracy Grimes earned an assist on the goal by Salinas. Grimes also had two goals Friday in a 5-2 Fredonia State win at Potsdam. The north county split left the Blue Devils with a 8-6-0 record, 2-4-0 in the conference. Junior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey stopped 10 shots of the 19 attempts by the Cardinals (12-2-0, 6-1-0), who were led by Gena Rosenbaum (3 goals, 1 assist). On the day, Rosenbaum set Plattsburgh single-season records for goals (17), assists (10) and points (44). The Blue Devils return home Friday against Oswego.
Blue Devils 5, Potsdam 2
Game 13, Oct. 10 at Potsdam, N.Y. -- Jessica Weiser and Tracy Grimes had two goals each to lead the Blue Devils to the conference road win. Weiser opened the scoring at 8:20 of the first half and scored at 36:20 of the second half -- her third and fourth goals of the season. Grimes made it 2-0 Fredonia State at the 10:08 mark of the first half. She added an insurance goal -- also her fourth of the year -- with 58 seconds left in the SUNYAC game. Sophomore forward Jamie Pricola scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal late in the first half. It gave the Blue Devils (8-5-0, 2-3-0) a 3-1 lead at the time. In addition, junior midfielder Katie Remus had two assists while the Fredonia State goalkeeping tandem of junior Brianna Falvey and freshman Courtney Judd each played one half and combined for nine saves.
Alfred 2, Blue Devils 0
Game 12, Oct. 7 at Alfred, N.Y. -- The Alfred University Saxons avenged a lopsided loss last season with a 2-0 non-conference home victory. Freshman goaltender Brianna Paquette posted the shutout, and junior Ellen Brandfonbrener scored both goals for the Saxons, who were defeated 7-0 at Fredonia in 2002. The shutout loss was the second straight sustained by the Blue Devils (7-5-0).
Oneonta 4, Blue Devils 0
Game 11, Oct. 4 at Fredonia -- The Oneonta Red Dragons stayed at the top of the SUNYAC standings Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Fredonia State. Oneonta (10-0-2, 6-0-1) scored twice in the first half and twice in the second en route to the win. Amanda LaPolla opened the scoring halfway through the first half, courtesy of a Brooke Davis assist. Alissa Karcz added a score with 11:00 minutes remaining in the half. Kelly Stevens and Davis accounted for the second half scoring with a goal apiece as Oneonta cruised to the 4-0 win. Laura Marcone and Jami Leibering combined for the shutout in goal, while the defense held Fredonia to only three shots on goal.
Blue Devils 3, New Paltz 0
Game 10, Oct . 3 at Fredonia -- Three different players had a goal and junior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey made six saves in the Blue Devils 3-0 SUNYAC victory over the New Paltz Hawks. Sophomore forward Jessica Weiser, freshman midfielder Tracy Grimes and junior midfielder Katie Remus scored for the Blue Devils (7-3-0, 1-2-0), while Falvey posted her second shutout of the season. She has 9 1/2 shutouts in two-plus seasons at Fredonia State, third most in school history. Working against the wind, Weiser scored her second goal of the season and put the Blue Devils on top 1-0 at 35:14 of the first period off a crossing pass by senior midfielder Mikelle Huber. Then with the wind at their backs, the Blue Devils scored twice more in the second half. Grimes netted her second collegiate goal at the 34:28 mark. Remus added an insurance tally at 6:34 of the second half, her fourth goal of the year. Junior forward Jamie Pricola was credited with an assist. The Blue Devils outshot the Hawks (1-8-1, 1-2-0), 22-10, with an 14-2 advantage in the second half. New Paltz goalkeeper Maggie Fenton made eight saves.
Blue Devils 4, Keuka 1
Game 9, Sept. 25 at Fredonia -- Sophomore midfielder Anita Salinas and junior midfielder Katie Remus had two goals each Thursday in the Blue Devils' 4-1 non-conference home victory over Keuka College. Salinas also added an assist for the Blue Devils (6-3-0), who did all their scoring in the first half and outshot their opponent, 28-1. Sophomore forward Amy Wenzel, sophomore forward Erin Schurr and senior defender Cari Hegyi added assists. Alyssa Hoober scored the lone Keuka goal on the only shot to get through to Fredonia State freshman goalkeeper Courtney Judd. It came at 35:50 of the first half to answer a goal by Salinas at 38:39. Remus scored the eventual game-winning goal at 26:17 on a pass from Salinas, who then made it 3-1 Blue Devils with her second goal of the game and fifth of the season at 15:24. Schurr earned the assist. Remus closed the scoring with her third goal of the season at 6:09, with an assist by Hegyi.
Brockport 6, Blue Devils 1
Game 8, Sept. 21 at Geneseo, N.Y. -- Logan Hadnicki had three consecutive goals for Geneseo. The Blue Devils (5-3-0, 0-2-0) managed just one shot -- an attempt in the first half by Mikelle Huber which missed the mark. As a result, Geneseo goalkeeper Jessica Francis didn't need to make a save in order to earn the shutout. Senior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey made six saves and freshman Courtney Judd had five for the Blue Devils.
Brockport 6, Blue Devils 1
Game 7, Sept. 20 at Brockport, N.Y. -- Anita Salinas scored the lone goal in the SUNYAC regular-season opener. It was the second goal of the season for Salinas, a sophomore midfielder from Rochester/Greece Athena, and cut Fredonia State’s deficit to 2-1 at the time – at 34:19 of the first half. Senior midfielder Mikelle Huber picked up an assist. Senior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey (Chittenango) made four saves in the first 78 minutes before she left the game. The loss ended a four-game winning streak by the Blue Devils (5-2-0, 0-1-0).
Blue Devils 1, St. John Fisher 0
Game 6, Sept. 16 at Rochester, N.Y. -- A goal by Anita Salias five minutes into the second half sent the Fredonia State Blue Devils, off to their best start ever, to a 1-0 victory Tuesday night over St. John Fisher. Salinas scored on a header following a cross kick by Caroline Fleck. Following a corner kick, the ball came back out to Fleck near midfield. She delivered a long air ball to the back post where Salinas was stationed. Salinas then headed the ball across the goal to the far low corner for her second goal of the season. Brianna Falvey played the first half in net and faced five shots. Courtney Judd saw six shots in the second half was Fredonia State’s goalkeeper of record. The victory represents the fastest the Blue Devils have gotten to five wins since the program gained varsity status in 1986. The 1993 team recorded its fifth win in its seventh game of the season en route an 11-7-0 season. Despite a 4-1-0 start, last year’s team reached win No. 5 in its eighth game. The 2002 Blue Devils finished 9-8-2 – their best mark since a 12-7-2 mark in 1994. In addition, the Blue Devils improved to 10-3-1 all-time against St. John Fisher.
Blue Devils 2, Roberts Wesleyan 1
Game 5, Sept. 10 at Fredonia -- Katie Remus had one goal and one assist in Fredonia State’s 2-1 non-conference victory Wednesday over Roberts Wesleyan. Remus, a junior midfielder, put the Blue Devils (4-1-0) on top with her first tally of the season just two minutes into the contest. She then set up Anita Salinas with the winning goal at 32:27 of the second half. It was the first goal of the season for Salinas, a sophomore midfielder, who five of the Blue Devils’ 26 shots. Erin Schurr, a sophomore forward, assisted on the goal by Remus. Junior goalkeeper Brianna Falvey made six saves in the game – three in each half.
Houghton 6, Blue Devils 0
Game 4, Sept. 6 at Fredonia -- Houghton proved its No. 14 NAIA preseason ranking was no fluke by winning the Days Inn Tournament in convincing fashion. The Highlanders failed to allow a single Fredonia State shot and had five players score goals. Hannah Toth was named tournament MVP on the strength of two goals in the championship game. She also had two goals Friday in Houghton's first-round victory. Anita Salinas, Meg LaMagna and Jamie Pricola were all-tournament selections for the Blue Devils (3-1-0), who were trying to win their home tournament for the second straight year.
Blue Devils 6, Thiel 0
Game 3, Sept. 5 at Fredonia -- The Blue Devils scored four goals in the first 15 minutes of the first half in the first round of the Days Inn Tournament. Jamie Pricola scored the first two goals while. Brianna Falvey and Courtney Judd each played one half in the net. They combined for three saves. Tracy Grimes, Jessica Weiser, Amy DeBarbieri and Amy Wenzel each had a goal for the Blue Devils (3-0-0). Pricola has scored five goals in the last two games. Fredonia State took 39 shots, Thiel took two. In the other women’s first round game, Hannah Toth scored two goals and six teammates had one goal each as Houghton downed Juniata, 8-0. The Highlanders – No. 14 in the NAIA preseason national rankings – outshot their opponent, 22-2. Fredonia State and Houghton meet for the women’s tournament title at 4 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game between Juniata and Thiel begins at noon.
Blue Devils 7, Clearwater Christian 3
Game 2, Aug. 30 at Clearwater, Fla. -- Jamie Pricola was a perfect 3-for-3 -- three goals on her only three shots of the game -- in the Blue Devils' 7-3 victory. Pricola, a junior forward, also added an assist while Sarah Quattrone had two goals and one assist. Amy DeBarbieri and Stephanie Lair added one goal each. Tracy Grimes and Anita Salinas had two assists each. Jessica Weiser had one assist. Brianna Falvey played the first 75 minutes in goal while Courtney Judd finished up in her first collegiate action. The pair combined for five saves. The Blue Devils outshot their hosts 27-11.
Blue Devils 1, Eckerd College 0
Game 1, Aug. 29 at St. Petersburg, Fla. -- A goal by Sarah Quattrone early in the second half lifted Fredonia State to a season-opening win over Eckerd College. Brianna Falvey posted the shutout with 15 saves. Eckerd outshot the Blue Devils, 15-6. Quattrone, a junior, scored her first career goal at the 54:35 mark. It was her only shot in the game. Amy Wenzel earned an assist.
