2003 MATCHES

DOUBLES TEAM EARNS SUNYAC POINT
Fredonia State's third doubles team of freshman Ellen Engel and senior Kelly Booth earned the team's lone point at the SUNYAC Tennis Championships Oct. 11-12 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y.

Engel and Booth defeated Plattsburgh's Angel Roy and Angela Salas 6-2, 6-2 in a first-round match. The Fredonia State tandem then dropped a 6-3, 6-0 quarterfinal decision to the New Paltz team of Sara Goldstein and Amanda Rosario. Goldstein and Rosario later advanced to the final match before losing.

The Blue Devils entered players in each of the nine divisions of the tournament. Junior Kimberly Menth competed in first singles, senior Catherine Wheeler in second singles, senior Kristin Mathis in third singles, senior Julie Massara in fourth singles, Engel in fifth singles and sophomore Sandra Payne in sixth singles. In addition to Engel and Booth, the doubles pairings were Mathis-Menth and Massara-Wheeler.

Cortland won the team title for the fourth time in the last seven years.

Brockport 7, Blue Devils 2 Match 8, Oct. 7 at Brockport, N.Y. -- Katie Wheeler and Ellen Engel won their respective singles matches to earn Fredonia State's two points. Wheeler competed at second singles, Engel at sixth singles. Both of their wins were the result of tiebreakers. The match ended a long layoff for the team. They had been idle since Sept. 25. The break included a cancelled match at Thiel.

Alfred 9, Blue Devils 0 Match 7, Sept. 25 at Fredonia -- Third-singles player Katie Wheeler extended her opponent to a third game before falling. Wheeler eventually dropped a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision. Kristin Mathis was next closest to winning a match. She dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision in fourth singles. Wheeler and Julie Massara fell 8-5 in second doubles.

Geneseo 9, Blue Devils 0 Match 6, Sept. 18 at Fredonia -- The second doubles team of Kelly Booth and Katie Wheeler came closest to securing a point in the Devils' second home match of the fall. Booth and Wheeler lost a tiebreaker, 8-6, in a 9-8 setback. The third doubles team of Michelle Cinque and Julie Massara was next closest, with an 8-5 loss, while first singles player Kim Menth dropped an 8-4 decision. Penn State Behrend 6, Blue Devils 3 Match 5, Sept. 16 at Fredonia -- Kristen Mathis produced the Blue Devils' lone point in competition with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory in fourth singles. Ellen Engel and the doubles team of Michelle Cinque and Brianna Farnand won their matches via forfeit because Behrend was unable to send out an opponent.

Blue Devils 3, Penn State Behrend 2 Match 4, Sept. 13 at Erie, Pa. -- The Blue Devils won their first team match of the season as Ellen Engel completed a perfect day, Bridget Saviola broke through, as did the doubles team of Michelle Cinque and Brianna Farnand. Engle was an 8-6 winner to go 3-0 in the tournament, Saviola was an 8-0 winner, and Cinque and Farnand combined for an 8-2 win.

Frostburg 4, Blue Devils 1 Match 3, Sept. 13 at Erie, Pa. -- Ellen Engel scored a 9-0 victory over Dawn Zimmerman for the Blue Devils' lone point. Next closest for the Blue Devils was the doubles team of Michelle Cinque and Brianna Farnand. They lost their match 8-5.

Allegheny 4, Blue Devils 1 Match 2, Sept. 13 at Erie, Pa. -- Ellen Engel earned the Blue Devils lone point with a 9-8 victory over Allegheny's Stephanie Parr. Engel claimed the point after winning a tiebreaker, 7-4.

St. John Fisher 9, Blue Devils 0 Match 1, Sept. 10 at Rochester -- Katie Wheeler, playing her first collegiate tennis after three years playing varsity volleyball, extended her opponent to three sets in second singles competition. She is a senior. Freshman Ellen Engel dropped her singles match 7-5, 6-2.
