The mission of the Accounting Society shall be to support and promote interest in
the accounting profession.
2015 Spring Activities
A part of the mission of the Accounting Society is to educate those with an interest
in accounting. This is accomplished through the following regular activities or events.
General Meeting Speakers
At each of our six or seven general membership meetings, a speaker talks about their
place of business, their position in it and their personal experiences involving their
day-to-day activities on the job. Students hear in detail what's expected of employees
in various accounting positions.
The spring semester's meetings will be held at 5:00 p.m. on six Thursday evenings during the semester. Exact dates will be announced later.
VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The 34th annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is co-sponsored by
the Accounting Society with the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteers must complete
training on online federal and NYS tax return preparation in order to help the elderly
and low-income resident of the City of Dunkirk electronically file their federal and
state income tax returns.
Business Etiquette Dinner
The 24th Annual Business Etiquette Dinner teaches attendees the appropriate behavior
required in a social setting. Each year the Leadership Corp students talk to attendees
regarding such topics as appropiate behavior and discussion topics at the cocktail
hour, dinner and other social engagements.
Educational Field Trip
This year students will travel on the 22nd Annual Educational Field Trip. Past years
have included trips to the Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum in Toronto, the Federal
Reserve Bank in Cleveland, and the Toronto Stock Exchange. One other year students
traveled to the New York Stock Exchange.
1. Meeting Attendance: Anyone who attends more than one-half of the general meetings for a semester is
considered an Accounting Society member.
2. VITA Volunteer: Any VITA volunteer is automatically considered an Accounting Society member.
3. Leadership position: Anyone who takes on a leadership role by coordinating an Accounting Society event
(e.g., VITA, Etiquette Dinner, Sabres Game Trip, CPA Office Visit, Sample CPA Review
Class Trip, etc) or by serving as an officer or chair is automatically considered
an Accounting Society member.
(NOTE: Of course, number 2 and 3 look better on your résumé.)
