Welcome to the SUNY Fredonia School of Business.
The School of Business, comprising the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics, is part of a proud tradition of excellence at Fredonia. This year, as in many previous years, Fredonia is ranked as one of the finest universities in the Northeast and one of the best buys in higher education in America. SUNY Fredonia ranks fifteenth in the nation by U.S. News and World Report as a high quality, low-priced, small class size higher education institution.
In December 2009, we opened the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator in downtown Dunkirk, NY very close to our campus. It will support up to 30 start-up companies with a technology-based business model and a commitment to Western New York. Students in the School of Business will have the opportunity to work with these entrepreneurs on their marketing and advertising plans, perform market research on their customer markets, assist in developing their business plans, and conduct a whole range of business problem-solving assignments for these start-up firms. These activities will help us expand the entrepreneurial aspects of our curriculum, lead to expanded internship opportunities, and provide inspiration for students interested in starting their own businesses, or job opportunities as they leave the incubator as independent businesses.
The School of Business offers you many opportunities to prepare for a fulfilling career and life. Undergraduate Majors are available in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, and Marketing. Our small class sizes lead to close interaction with our faculty, as well as the opportunity to conduct research under their direction. We stress involvement by students in our active clubs and organizations, including our award-winning Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), The Economics Club, the Business Club, the Accounting Society, a chapter of the American Marketing Association, and the Financial Management Association. These supplement your education by helping you develop professional skills you will use your entire life.
Because we prepare students for professional careers, we stress the importance of internship as a crucial part of your education. Internships are available locally, as well as in Buffalo and around the country. Moreover, we offer accelerated MBA programs affiliations with universities in the region, including St. Bonaventure University, SUNY Buffalo, Clarkson University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Niagara University. We also encourage you to study abroad and gain a global perspective, develop fluency in a second or third language, and take electives that will expand your knowledge of the world!
Our faculty are dedicated teachers and scholars. Our goal is to challenge you to achieve excellence and prepare you for the challenges of lifelong education since your work career is likely to take you into three to five separate and distinct knowledge areas, through twelve to fifteen jobs, and at least one international assignment during your anticipated forty-five year career. This means that you should have technical expertise in more than one subject area (for example, marketing and communications, management and psychology, finance and economics, etc.); knowledge and experience in global affairs; the ability to speak fluently in multiple languages; ability to be an effective team member in a diverse global department; and obtain a graduate degree and other continuing education to supplement what you learn here at SUNY Fredonia after you graduate.
We look forward to your participation in our unique learning community! Our faculty is eager to meet you and work with you!
Very truly yours,
Russell P. Boisjoly
Dean, School of Business
