Battle of the New Bands BOTNB 2011 logo

The Battle of the New Bands competition was started in 2009 as a way to give students a glimpse into the industry. During the two month long contest, ten manager applicants are selected, each given the task of forming a new band. Using the musician applicant submissions, student managers are able to network and recruit band members. While musicians are responsible for scheduling practices and writing and recording original songs, the managers must work to promote their band and the battle itself, including the assemblage of a press kit for their band.

Midway through the competition five bands are eliminated, leaving five bands to advance to the final stage. The winning band is selected at the Battle of the New Bands concert through combination of popular vote, judge votes (field professionals, Fredonia faculty, past battle winners), and manager performance. The victorious band and manager receive studio recording time at GCR Audio in Buffalo along with several other prizes.

Life is Art

Life is Art logoOn Saturday April 21st, 2012, the SUNY Fredonia Music Industry Club hosted its third annual Life is Art festival in the Barker Commons of Fredonia from 10am till 10pm. Among those performing are Inlite, Sleepless City, Alberto Alaska, So Far So Good, Almost Canadian, Wooden Change, Hunting for Teeth, Grey Eyed Goddess, Perestoika, and John Higgins. The Life is Art festival displays local art to the public, incorporating such forms as live music, poetry, comedy, media, and dance, to name a few. The annual event includes live musical performances and acts of other varieties, food, vendors, games, and raffles. The proceeds benefit Music is Art, a not-for-profit organization founded in 2004 by The Goo Goo Doll’s bassist Robby Takac. The foundation is based in Buffalo and aims to promote and explore music’s impact on the cultural, social, and educational aspects of local communities. Music is Art also collects musical instruments in an effort to help restore music programs in schools, such as the local Fredonia High School.

In 2010 the festival raised over $1,200 in profit for the cause with approximately 500 patrons in attendance. Last year, Life is Art raised another $600 for the organization. Our goal for this year’s upcoming festival is to raise at least double this donation amount and to significantly increase attendance. Life is Art is sponsored by local businesses’ product, food, and monetary donations.
