Assessment (Self-Improvement of Unit)

 

Mission

To provide a broad, integrated General Cc4lege Programthat will increasingly emphasize the appropriate use of new technologies, communication skills, problem­solving, scientific reasoning, a global perspective, and socioethical reasoning, while introducing students to arts & humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. To prepare students to work together with diverse people as weH as to adapt to diverse work and community settings.

Goal 1

 

Exposure of students to significant opportunities to write and hone their communication skills developmentally throughout the general education experience.

 

Measurement of Goal 1

 

Review of syUabi for all GCP classes requiring writing to identify the quantity of writing occurring in GCP parts IA and 113 as well as parts 11 and 111. Feedback should indicate the following:

IA   7 writing assignments

IB   3000 words and/or 3 writing assignments

II    I Writing Assignment and/or Essay Exams

III   I Writing Assignment and/or Essay Exams

The results obtained will provide a baseline for judging future performance and progress. The data would be shared with the GCP Committee and faculty teaching GCP courses according to the relevance of the specific observations.

 

Goal 2

 

Exposure of students to quantitative analysis in part IC of the GCP.

 

Measurement of Goal 2

 

Review of syllabi should indicate that students are experiencing multiple assignments of at least 3 types of quantitative analysis in these courses, i.e. problem solving via in-class teacher demonstrations or group work, out-of-class homework assignments or projects, and course exams.

Measurement of Goal 3

 

(1) SUNY Alumni Survey

(2) Middle States College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ)

 

Students will perceive the GCP as contributing significantly to their educational experience due to exposure to various disciplines as well as development of general education skills. To demonstrate perceived student satisfaction, relevant items on the SUNY Alumni Survey and CSEQ should be rated average or better. Such items tap overall feelings about general education at Fredonia, judgments regarding specific skills acquired during the undergraduate experience, as well as self-assessments of getting along with others and appreciating cultural differences.
