ASSESSMENT STATEMENT

SELF IMPROVEMENT FOR THE

OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY

I.         Mission

Three quotes from our Vision Statement are of major importance to the department of Environmental Health and Safety. The first, "It aims to provide a challenging safe and supportive educational environment" describes the main purpose of our department - to provide a safe and supportive environment for employees and students through the development of policies and programs that comply with OSHA /PESH Standards and the accompanying safety training and inspections. The second, "Fredonia's professional staff will continue its strong contributions to student development and learning outside of class" is exemplified by the continuing sponsorship of interns and student assistants in the health and safety field. The third, "Our service to our region will include an increasing range of volunteer services and greater support for the region's economic and educational development" is fulfilled by our participation in the Northern Chautauqua Safety Council and Department of Labor training grants.

1.       To increase the compliance of the campus with Occupational Safety and Health Act and

Public Employees Safety and Health Act regulations and NYS Uniform Fire Prevention & Building Code.

2.   To achieve a higher percentage of employees trained and to improve the quality of

      the training.

III.      Measure of Goals

Health Act mandated policies and programs, their required reviews, and annual reports.

2.   Number of annual fire inspection violations and completed construction permits.

3.   Number of safety training programs and percentage of attendees.

IV.      Results

1.       Yearly audit of policies and programs should show timely revisions and annual reports, new

policies in place by mandated compliance dates.

2.   Data collected from annual fire inspection should show a decrease in violations.

2.       Audit of safety training attendance and program surveys should show higher percentage of

attendance and improved quality of training materials.

V.        Feedback into the Unit

1.   Corrective action should be taken immediately to eliminate fire inspection violations.

2.       Consistency in meeting deadlines, introducing new standards and continued reductions in

fire violations will indicate to the University as a whole that the Environmental Health and    Safety Office is committed to the goal of being compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and Public Employees Safety and Health Act and Fire Prevention regulations.

3.   Training attendance percentages and feedback from programs will be utilized to

      upgrade programs, speakers and materials.
