Biography

Mrs. Mary Powers joined the faculty at Fredonia in 1989. A native of New Hampshire, she received her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of NH in 1962, and taught secondary school chemistry, physics, and physical science for several years in Somersworth, NH. After raising a family, she returned back to college, and pursued an MS in Chemistry at SUNY, Fredonia, graduating in 1984. While employed at Medaille College in Buffalo, she taught applied chemistry courses and mathematics, and developed a physical science course for the education majors, which later became a requirement for their curriculum. In 1993, she moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and taught all three levels of general chemistry, as well as off-campus courses in organic/biochemistry for nursing students at Ferris State College in Big Rapids. She also developed and administered off-campus labs for these students, and participated in Ferris' distance learning program. Returning to Fredonia in 1998, she has continued to be involved in curriculum revision. She is responsible for teaching "Chemistry For Consumers", a popular CCC course, and coordination and teaching of the General Chemistry Laboratory curriculum.
