John is a junior chemistry major interested
in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and spectroscopy. His research this
semester in the synthetic organic and combinatorial fields under the supervision
of Dr. Philip Kumler involves making a small (greater that 10, less than 100)
library of organic compounds using the Quest210 manual synthesizer. Subsequently,
John will analyze and characterize the compounds using spectrometric techniques
with NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) IR (infrared) and LC-MS (liquid
chromatography-mass spectroscopy) instrumentation. Next summer, John plans to
participate in an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates), or an internship
in industry. After completing the coursework for his degree at Fredonia, John
plans to apply to graduate school.
