Starting his sixth semester of undergraduate
research under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Fountain, Joel is synthesizing
modified nucleotides which will be incorporated into RNA molecules for
thermodynamic studies. These modified nucleotides lack the ability to hydrogen
bond, and can be used to study specific hydrogen bonds in larger RNA molecules.
Joel says he is learning patience, improved laboratory techniques in molecular
synthesis, and meeting new people at the University of Rochester where he
is collaborating in the synthesis of RNA molecules. Joel has been awarded two
summer internships through a Merck/AAAS (American Association for the
Advancement of Science) research program.
