Hydrophobicity, or the repelling of water, is the topic of John's summer research, which he will continue throughout the fall semester. Under the direction of Dr. Sherri Mason, John is studying a series of fluorocarbons and how they repel water molecules. Using a computer modeling program, the fluorocarbon solute is simulated via quantum mechanics and the solvent, water, is represented by a classical mechanics molecular modeling program. The data collected will include solubilities, enthalpies, and entropies of solvation. The research includes surveying several computer modeling programs, such as GAUSSIAN, GAMESS, etc. This will be John's third semester of research. Last year John worked with Dr. Philip Kumler synthesizing amines and worked on the photochemistry of phenanthrene.
