Andy, a senior biochemistry major, continued the research he was
doing in the spring semester. Under the supervision of Dr. Matthew
Fountain, Andy worked on defining the structure of an RNA hairpin loop
which contains 5-nucleotide bases. Analysis of 2-dimensional NMR data,
using SPARKY NMR analysis software, provides distance and dihedral angle
restraints of the 3-D structure of the RNA hairpin. These distance and
dihedral restraints are then used by the program CYANA to generate a low
energy 3-D structure for the hairpin. Using MolMol (molecular modeling),
the molecule can be viewed to analyze the structure and optimize
restraints. Andy plans to present his findings at the McNair Conference
and the SUNY Fredonia SRCEE conference next spring. |
