Katie is a junior environmental science and
chemistry major. Katie found a “real job” this summer at Columbia Analytical Services
in Rochester, NY. She worked in the wet chemistry department analyzing water samples
for such organizations as the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and private
companies. Katie filtered water samples and tested them for TSS (total suspended solids),
TDS (total dissolved solids) and TS (total solids). She also worked with soil samples
to determine the dry weight percentage of solids. Katie used balances, ovens, steam
baths, pipets, and a TDS meter, which is similar to a pH meter. This was Katie’s first
full-time job and she says she gained experience and confidence in what environmental
scientists do. She also learned responsibility, dealing with time pressures, deadlines
and being well-paid.
