Mike is a senior chemistry major. He spent his
summer at Case Western Reserve Institute in Cleveland under an REU (Research Experience
for Undergraduates) grant. Under the supervision of Dr. Christoph Weder, Mike worked in
the Macromolecular Science and Engineering department synthesizing a series of
poly(phenyleneethynylene)s (PPE). Mike was able to synthesize a PPE using a complex
five-step reaction, which is impressive because he had only 10 weeks in which to meet
his goal. Mike gained experience using a glove box, a vacuum line, an X-ray
diffractometer, a TGA(thermal gravimetric analyzer) and two different NMR’s (nuclear
magnetic resonance) instruments. Mike says he had the chance to experience what
graduate school is like, which reinforces his decision to go to graduate school next
fall. He has been invited to apply at Case Western, and he is also interested in SUNY
Stony Brook, Princeton, the University of Rochester, and the University of Pittsburg.
