A native of Rochester, N.Y. Mike is a biology major and a chemistry minor. As a McNair scholar, Mike has been doing research under the supervision of Dr. Mark Janik for four semesters and a summer. His work involves the synthesis and characterization of colchicine analogs. Colchicine is an effective anti-cancer drug, but it also has undesirable toxic properties, which prohibits its use for cancer treatment. Mike’s interest in chemistry is organic synthesis, and he enjoys investigating the mechanism of the reactions he is performing in the lab. Mike has been accepted in the Ph.D program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Rochester. His long-range plans include working for a pharmaceutical company. Mike is the recipient of the 2006 Outstanding Research Award.
