Julia earned her B.S. degree in chemistry and plans to enter the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado in the fall. Julia also applied to the University of Oregon, Oregon State, Indiana University, the University of Montana and was accepted at all. At the School of Mines, Julia will receive full tuition, health insurance, moving expenses and a stipend of $16,000. She is interested in working with uranium transport in porous materials with Dr. James Ranville of the Colorado School of Mines. Julia has been active in undergraduate research for her four years at SUNY Fredonia, with Dr. Michael Milligan as her mentor. Her project has been to extract PAH’s (poly aromatic hydrocarbons) and dioxins from air samples that accumulate the pollutants. Julia presented this research at SRCE (Student Research and Creativity Exposition) and GLRC (Great Lakes Research Consortium). Last summer Julia was awarded an undergraduate research grant and went to Pacific Northwest National Lab to work with Dr. Dawn Wellman. Julia presented this project at the 231st national ACS (American Chemical Society) Conference in Atlanta, GA. Julia served as teaching assistant in general and organic chemistry labs, has been active in Chem Club and earned the chemistry department’s analytical, research and Dingledy physical chemistry awards. Her long range plans include perhaps working at one of the National Laboratories, teaching college and improving the environment at nuclear sites.
