Kathleen’s interest in chemistry is chemical engineering, and she has completed the first three years of the 3-2 engineering program here at SUNY Fredonia. In the fall Kathy has chosen to attend the University of Buffalo for the next two years of the program. Kathy says she has enjoyed the benefits of a small college here at Fredonia, and now she’s ready for a bigger school. Kathy has done undergraduate research under the supervision of Dr. Philip Kumler for 4 semesters. Her first project was the “Isolation of Resveratrol from Concord Grape Skins” where she used solid-phase extraction and TLC (thin-layer chromatography). Her second project is entitled the “Photochemistry of Stilbene and Resveratrol Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex.” Kathy presented both projects at SRCE (Student Research and Creativity Exposition). Kathy also presented her research at an ACS (American Chemical Society) conference in Rochester last year. Kathy served as a chemistry and math tutor for two years, and her summers are dedicated to working in the Lindstrom family greenhouse in Hamburg. Kathy’s long-range plans include getting a job in research and development and working toward improving consumer products.
