Dr. Barbara Mallette brings to her faculty position urban and rural classroom teaching experience and administrative experience. She has served the campus in a variety of capacities (e.g., Director of International Education and Interim Director of the School of Education). Dr. Mallette is an award-winning teacher (the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching). She also serves as Chair of the Human Subjects Review Committee, a group that reviews all research projects at Fredonia.

Dr. Mallette's interests focus on teaching diverse student populations-pupils with disabilities or reading difficulties and pupils from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Her background in special education and reading, and her extensive international experience shape the courses she teaches. Assignments in Dr. Mallette's courses typically involve some level of partnership with a local school district and/or analysis of assessment data as candidates plan appropriate instruction.

Research Interests

Dr. Mallette is drawn to research that contributes to effective instructional practices of P-12 pupils, particularly in the area of expository writing. She also conducts research on the identification of instructionally alterable variables by candidates in our undergraduate education programs. Dr. Mallette's scholarly activities also involve the development of grants. She has been awarded two Fulbright Hays Groups Projects Abroad grants (Uzbekistan, 2000; Morocco, 2005) and was the first author of Project BRIDGE, a USDOE funded project (2007) whose focus is preparing content area teachers for English language learners.
