Baross-Clothier Scholarship (Includes Adolescent Ed.) $3250, up to 3 recipients @ $1000 each
Description:
This scholarship was established in 2003 in honor of Mr. James Baross and Mrs. Mary Clothier Baross. Mr. and Mrs. Baross met while they were attending SUNY Fredonia in the 1940s. Mrs. Baross is a native of Silver Creek and graduated from Fredonia in 1943. Mr. Baross left SUNY Fredonia to serve his country during World War II, then returned after the war to complete his degree in 1947. After teaching for a few years in Western New York, Mr. and Mrs. Baross relocated to southern California.

> Be in good academic standing.
> Be working while attending college.

Thelma Brynolfson Scholarship (Includes Adolescent Ed. Music) $950, up to 2 recipients @ $450
Description:
This scholarship was established in 2002 in honor of Thelma (Anderson) Brynolfson who graduated from Fredonia State in 1938. She taught in Cherry Creek for 3 years before marrying William Brynolfson and raising 4 sons. When her sons were grown, Thelma then returned to teaching; working as a substitute for 10 years then as a full-time teacher in the Kenmore-Tonawanda elementary schools for another 16 years.

Anthony Deiulio Scholarship $1700, up to 3 recipients @ $550 each
Description:
This scholarship was established in 1996 from the estate of Anthony M. Deiulio who earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English from Syracuse University and his Ed.D. in Curriculum Development and Administration from the University at Buffalo. From 1956 to 1966 he served as professor of Education and Assistant Dean at the University of Toledo, Ohio. From 1966-88 he was an Education professor at SUNY Fredonia. Dr. Deiulio served as Chair of the Department of Education from 1966-71. He retired in 1988 but remained professionally active after moving to North Carolina. Dr. Deiulio passed away in 1998.

Helen Kelly Lillie Memorial Award $1575, up to 3 recipients @ $750 each
Description:
In 1942, Helen Kelly married Mr. Lillie, who had been President of the Fredonia Normal Class of 1939. They had two children and six granddaughters. Mr. Lillie completed his B.S. in Education at Albany State and an M.B.A. at the University of Buffalo. He taught briefly in public schools and at the University of Buffalo, and spent over 40 years as a Certified Public Accountant.

Richard & Arlene LoGuidice Award $1200, up to 2 recipients @ $600 each
Description:
Richard and Arlene LoGuidice are both graduates from SUNY Fredonia, Class of 1965. Both are career teachers in the Rochester area: Arlene teaches elementary primarily in the Gates-Chili School District, and Richard in the Greece Central School District in elementary and middle school. The LoGuidices established this award 1999 because they have a strong loyalty to SUNY Fredonia and believe that their four years here had a significant impact on their lives and careers. Their continued support was further inspired by a wonderful thank-you note they received from a recipient of their award. Richard and Arlene LoGuidice prefer that serious consideration should be given to the student who works really hard, but does not always get the recognition that others might.

> Show promise and true dedication to children and teaching.

Philip Kochman Scholarship (Includes International students and Adolescent Ed.) $3650, up to 3 recipients @ $1200 each
Description:
Dr. Philip Kochman retired in 1969 after teaching for 20 years as a professor of Education at Fredonia State. In his last years at Fredonia State, he was Director of Foreign Students and was dedicated to recruiting and guiding international students. He spent 5 years in Indonesia working to improve the educational system and also served on a United Nations team in Ethiopia to develop teacher-training programs. This scholarship was established in 2002 with the belief that education can be a potent and positive force in the global war on poverty and oppression.
Scholarship will be awarded to either:
> a foreign student at any grade level
> a freshman with financial need from a developing third world country whose intent is to return there to teach
> a student with financial need at any grade level from an economically depressed area whose intent is to return there to teach
> a student with financial need at any grade level.
Criteria
Qualified applicants must:
> Be enrolled in the College of Education as a Childhood or Early Childhood major.
> Meet one of the above criteria.

Helen Buderkin Award $700, up to 2 recipients @ $350 each
Description:
Established in 1970, this award honors Helen Buderkin who was a highly respected faculty member of the State College of Fredonia. She was associated with the kindergarten of the Campus School for many years, and she served as mentor, educator and role model to scores of student teachers.

> Be a graduating senior at the conclusion of the spring semester.
> Have shown outstanding ability in student teaching.

Description:
The Chautauqua County Retired Teachers established this award in 2002 to reward outstanding Education majors (one elementary and one early childhood) who are graduates from Chautauqua County High Schools and who completed student teaching with honors.

Class of 1953 Neil Postman Memorial Award $825, up to 2 recipients @ $400
Description:
Neil Postman is a SUNY Fredonia graduate of 1953, a world-renown media scholar, and a nationally recognized teacher, author and cultural critic. After graduating from Fredonia, he earned a PhD from Columbia then held taught for 40 years at New York University where he was also Chair of the Dept. of Culture and Communication. Dr. Postman authored over 20 books, is a member of the SUNY Fredonia Athletic Hall of Fame, and received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Association, as well as being Fredonia’s first graduate to be named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the Confederation of SUNY Alumni Associations.

> Have proven excellence and great potential as a teacher.

Description:
In February 2000, this endowment was established for Education majors (preferably Early Childhood) who maintain a Grade Point Average that exceeds the required minimum; who demonstrate exceptional skill in student teaching; and who receive the endorsement of the College of Education Faculty of the Professional Year.
Criteria
Qualified applicants must:
> Be enrolled in the College of Education as a Childhood or Early Childhood major. [Preference given to Early Childhood major]
> Be a graduating senior at the conclusion of the spring semester.
> Receive recommendations from the Professional Year faculty that the Committee will request from the faculty.
> Have a minimum 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average at the time of the selection.

Charles and Shirley Erbsmehl Scholarship $800, up to 2 recipients @ $400
Description:
Both Charles and Shirley Erbsmehl attended SUNY Fredonia in the mid 1950’s. Charles (Chuck) served in Korea prior to attending Fredonia, and Shirley had worked as a secretary for a year before attending. Shirley then worked her way through college and earned her degree with no financial assistance. Charles decided Fredonia’s music education was not what he wanted, so he found employment elsewhere. Charles and Shirley were married prior to Shirley’s graduation. Shirley then taught elementary school for over 30 years in Lancaster Central Schools, and Charles became a nationally recognized piano technician. They returned to Fredonia in 1990 and continue to be active in the community. Established in 2004, this scholarship is for a graduating senior who has excelled in elementary education and has shown “that special insight” to work effectively with children on a daily basis. The award is for an Education major who has demonstrated outstanding ability in student teaching and “the gift” as a teacher.

> Be a graduating senior at the conclusion of the spring semester. [Preference given to Lancaster NY Central School graduates]

Description:
The Mabel S. Melvin Estate established this scholarship in honor of Floyd J. Melvin, Class of 1899 and Mabel Smith Melvin, Class of 1910. The recipient must be, “A worthy Chautauqua County student who is training in the regular teachers course.”

Carol Scrace Pierce Award $200, 1 recipient @ $200
Description:
Carol Scrace Pierce was a graduate of Fredonia State in 1956 with a dual major in speech and elementary education. Her mother, Norma Tanner Scrace, was a graduate of the State Normal School in 1927 and established this award in 1982. This award is to be given to a student majoring in elementary education, and possessing an aptitude or desire to work with exceptional children, either special needs or gifted. Recipient should be highly principled, worthy and in need of financial aid.

Louis E. Raths Scholarship $50, 1 recipient @ $50
Description:
Dr. Louis E. Raths was a resident of Dunkirk and served as an adjunct professor in the Education Department. He was instrumental in the establishment of the original Early Childhood Education program. This scholarship was developed in 1978 to be given to a deserving prospective teacher who is recommended by the College of Education Faculty.

Margaret Sawkins-Hastie Award $600, up to 2 recipients @ $300 each
Description:
Dr. Sawkins-Hastie’s long association with the Fredonia College Foundation began in the late 1930s when high school music organizations participated in the annual Music Festival sponsored by the Music Department of the Fredonia Normal School. After graduating from Westfield Academy, Dr. Sawkins-Hastie earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Fredonia. After 13 years as a classroom teacher then reading supervisor at what later became Lake Shore Central School in Angola, NY, Dr. Sawkins-Hastie joined the faculty of the Campus School at the Fredonia College, where she taught primary classes for 11 years. Dr. Sawkins-Hastie then earned her Doctor of Education from SUNY Buffalo in 1970 and became an associate professor in Fredonia’s Education Dept. where she taught language arts, reading methods and children’s literature until her retirement in 1978.

Wolfenden Scholarship Fund (Includes Adolescent Ed.) $1500, 1 recipient @ $1500
Description:
Miss Wolfenden graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1962. She graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 1966 with a B.A. degree. She also earned a Master's degree and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Fredonia. She began her teaching career at Westfield Academy & Central School. In 1968, she joined the faculty of her former Alma Mater, Dunkirk High School, where she taught social studies. In 1979, she became Principal of Dunkirk Middle School and Administrator for Special Education. In 1985 Miss Wolfenden was appointed Superintendent of Dunkirk City School District. She has also held various leadership positions in professional organizations as well as membership in the Dunkirk Rotary, the Fredonia Methodist Church, and the Fredonia Eastern Star Chapter.

> Be completing a degree in Adolescence Social Studies or Childhood Education with a Social Studies Concentration (including Middle School Extension).
> Be accepted to a graduate program in Education at SUNY Fredonia.

Marjorie E. Woods Scholarship $325, 1 recipient @ $325
Description:
James and Jenifer Woods established this endowment in 1996 to honor their mother who received her teaching certificate and Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Fredonia. Mrs. Woods’ passion for elementary school teaching emerged from her appreciation for the importance of early learning in writing and reading. Marjorie Woods grew up in Sinclairville in Chautauqua County. Preference will be given to a student from Sinclairville, New York.

> Be enrolled in the College of Education as a Childhood or Early Childhood major.
> Be a graduating senior at the conclusion of the spring semester. [Preference given to student from Sinclairville, NY]
